Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mia Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Mia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish I could say I should have started sooner, but I believe that timing is everything. You see, I’ve always had a creative side growing up and I nurtured that creativity every summer between middle school to high school. I’m what you would call a “serial hobbyist”. I’ve learned how to design and sew simple clothes using my mother’s sewing machine and even learned how to draw digitally using a drawing tablet (although I wasn’t very good at it). From the many creative pursuits I’ve gone through, I realized the only thing that I was good at was learning very fast. When I graduated high school, I had chosen to pursue a degree in civil engineering. Like most Filipino-American immigrants, we were taught to pursue a career in something that would make a lot of money. Being a starving artist was never an option at the time for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a Filipino-American first-generation college graduate with a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering. When I graduated university in 2019, I immediately accepted the first corporate job offer I had to work for a Top 10 General Contractor in California.
I started out as a field engineer, a rarity in a male-dominated field. Within the first year, the COVID-19 pandemic hit as I finished my first office tenant improvement project and was told to start working from home. As construction projects ground to a halt, I’ve seen the most hardworking coworkers get laid off or fired, which became a moment of realization for me- that I was not a human in the corporate world, but just a number on a spreadsheet.
I stayed in that job for three years until I had a mental breaking point, where I eventually quit in order to focus on my mental health. Around that same time, I discovered Vivian on Tiktok (@wannabe.animated) who is a fellow 3D animator who creates these wonderful animations for beauty brands. I thought that was so cool, so being the serial hobbyist that I was, I started learning the 3D software Blender.
Learning 3D modeling and animation without any prior knowledge is very, very hard. Most people start to learn but get lost and frustrated along the way that they mostly give up. As for me, I was very determined to succeed. I knew that going back to the corporate world was worse than learning difficult things, so I continued and persisted to learn all aspects of 3D modeling.
Currently, I’m collaborating with skincare and beverage brands to create 3D animations of their products. I put these products in semi-realistic 3D environments to showcase them in a fun, colorful and creative way that is different from the traditional corporate-style advertising that you may come across on social media.
You can make a lot of cool things in 3D in ways that you can’t achieve in real life. Of course, there are limitations to 3D rendering, but overall, I truly find the entire creative process rewarding because it is the first time that I can actually bring my (or your brand’s) imagination to life.
I’d love to work with more international skincare and beverage brands who are passionate about their products and want to showcase them in different ways.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My best advice to building an audience on social media is to immediately showcase your work 80% of the time and 20% should be to let your audience know a little bit of your background story so they can relate to you.
The second best advice is to keep posting even if you feel like no one’s watching or even if you feel like you’re not getting any followers. The thing is, you need to be ready for that 1% chance that a brand is going to come across your page. You have about 5 seconds to catch their attention with your content, so you want to make sure you’ve built up a personal brand with high-quality content each time.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’d love to see my 3D animations outside on a big screen one day. I think that’d be super cool. However, my current goal for next year is to work with even more brands!
