We recently connected with Susan Myers and have shared our conversation below.
Susan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Is your team able to work remotely? If so, how have you made it work? What, if any, have been the pitfalls? What have been the non-obvious benefits?
My husband and I have been on the road living in our RV since 2015. As a quilt pattern designer, my work includes not only designing the patterns, but creating the quilts and designs. I am a one person company. I am the designer, pattern tester, creator, and marketer of all of my patterns. Working remotely allows me to connect with people from all over the world and creates a way to establish relationships with so many more people than you could possible meet in a brick and mortar store.
When we first hit the road, it was sometimes difficult to maintain a good internet connection. Since the vast majority of my work involves using the internet to not only help me with design, but to connect with my customers, it was very important to always have a way to stay connected. Originally, I used a hotspot for that, but often we had to limit our travels to places that the hotspot would work. Most National Parks and remote areas were out of the question.
Fortunately, over the years with new technology, achieving an internet connection has become much easier. This winter we are parked at the Grand Canyon and the signal is perfect for my needs thanks to the use of Starlink and our hotspots.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I created my website, Suzy’s Sitcom, in 2010 to document new and original art and craft ideas. The Sitcom has grown to now feature Sew Alongs, arts, crafts, and humor, with a specialty in unique and whimsical quilt patterns, and currently hosts new free Sew Alongs each month. With over 40,000 loyal subscribers, the Sitcom is growing every day. It is one of the best places to go online for original, unique quilt patterns and crafts.
Initially, my business began as a way to share my craft ideas and a bit of humor. Over the past few years, I have moved to specialize in older crafts, specifically quilt patterns, with an emphasis on applique and embroidery. It took me a while to find my niche, and while crafting is still my love, designing quilt patterns is a specialty I enjoy.
My patterns are unique because they showcase a whimsical mix of applique and hand embroidery, two older fabric art forms combined to create something new and unique in the quilt pattern industry. Each pattern is inspired by places we have visited, local folk art, or even my granddaughter’s imagination.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I have found that the best way to keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty is to have my personal email address available to all customers and to be present on social media for any that would like to contact me there.
I currently run a Facebook Group called Suzys Crafters and Quilters which attracts new customers and those that would just like to see what others have created. What I enjoy the most about this group is that many love to show off their creations of my patterns. So many new color choices and fun techniques that it inspires not only those that are members of the group, but it enables me to see what is most enjoyed so that I can create even more designs. I use this group not only to inspire, but to help individuals with questions and teach basic techniques.
Social media is just one of my options for customer contact as I make my self available through email for any pattern questions or suggestions from my customers. I practice a quick response time and try to take the time to not only help my customers, but to encourage them to create something that they love.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My most effective strategy for building clientele has been my email subscriber list. I offer a free weekly email newsletter on my website that draws interested individuals from all over the world. This email subscriber list is essential for creating an effective marketing campaign when new patterns come out. Many people are not comfortable on social media and an email campaign is a great way to get in front of those that prefer to just get an email. Since the method of subscribing is totally optional to the reader, the email subscriber list consists of those that will welcome my emails and are current and potential customers.
