We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dorin Mogda. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dorin below.
Dorin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
While in high school my parents encouraged me to pursue a college degree in Architecture since it was a more stable source of income than being an artist. After I graduated high school, I went to college and started taking architecture courses, but I still had an inner longing for creating. I’ve always been passionate about art, but passion doesn’t exactly put food on the table, or so my parents said. After three semesters of intense studying, while working in a shipyard part-time, I took the initiative to transition from a career in architecture to one in fine arts. It was a risky decision, but deep down it felt like the right one. The transition was far from smooth. I faced financial struggles, self-doubt, and the skepticism of those who couldn’t understand my decision to leave a secure job in architecture. But I persevered, believing that my passion would lead me to success. I took art classes, participated in art contests, and networked with fellow artists. Slowly but surely, I started gaining recognition for my unique style and dedication to my craft. Now I’m at a prestigious college, Ringling College of Art & Design, in my senior year getting ready for my thesis show.

Dorin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born in Romania and moved to Florida with my family when I was fourteen. Being in the United States allowed me to learn from various artists with different practices. Eventually, I developed my creative process, reflecting the intricate interplay between my emotional, metaphysical, and physical life. Within these dynamics, I find inspiration to construct my figure-based narratives. As an interdisciplinary artist, I explore the connections between various artistic mediums, including oil paint, charcoal, and photography. Each medium offers unique possibilities while further exploring how they harmonize and interact to create a visual symphony.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist has to be the ability to express my thoughts, emotions, and perspectives in a way that goes beyond verbal communication. It’s a great way for self-discovery and personal growth with the potential to resonate and impact others. Also, being part of a creative community where I can share my experiences, receive feedback, and collaborate with like-minded individuals brings an incredible sense of fulfillment.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I was a big fan of Michael Jackson growing up. Especially when he said, “if you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change.” My goal is to create a place of introspection through art. Like MJ I want to bring love in the world and create a space where feelings and emotions aren’t seen as a weaknesses.
