Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Char Nelson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Char, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
One of the biggest risk I’ve taken was this year, when I moved to georgia from Tennessee. I’m an introvert so moving from place to place is already a risk for me in itself but moving with the profession I have & the intent for myself & my business to grow, I needed to just suck it up. I had just graduated esthetician school in September & had a handful of loyal clients already established & coming in regularly, with help from the school. It was an amazing first time experience for a while but I knew I wanted to live in a bigger city, like Atlanta. I applied to get my esthetician license in Georgia in January, moved to Georgia in February, & it’s been great ever since. I got connected with my amazing bosses & coworkers who believes in me through thick & thin, they push me to new limits & make sure I’m always learning new skills related to my profession. Each month my client base grows stronger & I couldn’t thank them enough in making me feel comfortable & a part of a family at Concourse Dream Salon. Moving to a new state where you don’t know anyone & you have to start from the bottom when gaining clientele is a big risk, but the people around me made my time here enjoyable & worth the risk.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
When I was younger I used to go get my hair done every two weeks at my Aunties salon. I loved the environment & energy of being in the salon the girls were radiating with joy & happiness. It always had a distinct smell, like fresh silk press & conditioner . I knew when I got older I wanted to do something that made girls as happy as my Auntie made them. A place where clients could come in even on a bad day & are able to focus on their self care, & leave with a better day, & a smile. I didn’t know how to do hair but i love lashes, so that’s what I went to school specifically to learn. My Esthetics teacher was such an amazing & inclusive instructor that I eventually fell in love with everything that she taught me & can now professionally master facials, waxing, chemical peels, & plenty more. At the end of each service I love the feeling I get seeing the look on clients faces, their satisfaction & excitement keeps me going.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the client is always right. Working in retail, they tell you this a lot, from the time you start, till the time you go. In my profession is better for me to tell the client what’s best for them. Majority of people get skin care advice from someone they know, with perfect looking skin, or they get it from internet trends. Everyone’s skin is different, & with a proper skin analysis a licensed professional can tell you exactly how to treat your skin.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I believe moving to a big city not knowing anyone & having to build clientele, showcased my resilience. It’s soo much easier to give up, but I had people around me that believed I could do it & I believed in myself that I could also.
