We were lucky to catch up with Robert Morrison recently and have shared our conversation below.
Robert, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Overall I can say yes. I didn’t really know my career path, but whatever it was gonna be I wanted to be happy with it. Here’s a some elaboration on it.
Being a creative or an artist brings its own set of joys and challenges, and my happiness in this field is deeply rooted in my passion for self-expression and the fulfillment that comes from bringing my ideas to life. The creative process allows me to explore my imagination, push boundaries, and communicate emotions in unique ways that resonate with others.
While there may be moments of uncertainty and financial instability in the creative world, the intrinsic satisfaction derived from pursuing my artistic endeavors outweighs the potential comforts of a more conventional job. The ability to chart my own course, make meaningful connections through my work, and constantly evolve as an artist are aspects of this journey that bring me a sense of contentment.
That said, like anyone else, I do have moments of reflection where I wonder about the stability and structure that a traditional job might offer. The idea of financial security and a more predictable routine can be enticing, and I’ve pondered what it would be like to navigate a different path. However, the passion and fulfillment I find in my creative pursuits ultimately keep me committed to this unique journey.
In the end, the choice between being a creative and pursuing a traditional job is a deeply personal one. It’s about finding a balance that aligns with one’s values, goals, and sense of purpose. For me, the joys of creativity make the uncertainties worthwhile, and I believe that happiness, in any profession, stems from the alignment of one’s work with their passions and aspirations.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi there! I’m Robert Morrison, known as Rob Diggy in the music world.
I’m a film and media composer based in Chicago, IL, with a lifelong passion for playing guitar and piano.
Early Influences:
Like any other kid, I enjoyed neighborhood sports, building go-carts, and making bikes.
Everything changed when I saw my Uncle Carl and his band perform live in my grandmother’s living room. That sparked my interest in playing a musical instrument, so I started with the guitar.
Entry into the Music and Film Industry:
My entry into the music business before the film industry has a personal and inspiring backstory. My first experience began visiting a recording studio, I had to be about twelve years old, driven by a passion that led to a pivotal moment at P.S. Studios in Chicago. I was invited to the studio with my cousin, a talented drummer, where I encountered the names of iconic artists like Earth Wind and Fire, The Emotions, and Duke Ellington on Gold Records adorning the walls. Although I didn’t witness their actual recording sessions, the presence of these renowned musicians and the studio’s rich history left a profound impact on me.
During one session, I was already in the studio when Paul Serrano, professionally known as P.S., walked in. In awe, I approached him, shook his hand, and expressed my honor at meeting him. His warm response left an indelible mark on me. The experience felt like encountering a musical deity professionally known for the work of so many talented artists.
Years later, as an adult, I returned to P.S. Studios to record my first-ever record for Ichiban Records with artist LV Johnson. Approaching Paul again, I shared the story of my childhood visit and expressed my excitement at now recording my own work. His delight mirrored my own, marking a significant moment in my journey into the music industry. This connection with Paul, from a starstruck young visitor to a recording artist fulfilling a dream, is a testament to the transformative power of passion and perseverance in the pursuit of one’s creative aspirations.
My Entry into the Film Industry:
My introduction to the Film Industry was quite spontaneous. I was in a loft space where other creatives shared their workspace, and one of the clients had a film studio where they were simultaneously editing and shooting a film. Curious, I walked into their office and witnessed a scene being played. Filled with excitement, I boldly exclaimed, “I bet I could add music to that scene.”
The crew, equally intrigued, gave me the chance to demonstrate my skills. With a mix of piano and strings, I scored the scene on the spot. Although it was a modest addition, the crew was in awe, and that enthusiasm led them to ask, “Can you finish the film?” This marked the moment when I scored my first film, becoming a defining step in my journey into the Film Industry. It was a spontaneous yet transformative experience that opened doors to a new chapter in my creative endeavors within the film world.
Role as a Film Composer:
My role as a Film Composer, I leverage my skills as a musician and producer to contribute to the overall success of a film. My primary objective is to ensure client satisfaction by creating a compelling and fitting musical score that enhances the cinematic experience. One of the key aspects of my role is problem-solving. I understand the nuances of storytelling through music, and I use this understanding to address any challenges that may arise during the creative process. By delivering a high-quality score, I aim to not only meet but exceed the expectations of the director and other stakeholders involved in the project.
Furthermore, I recognize the importance of establishing a collaborative and communicative relationship with the director. By doing so, I strive to put them at ease, ensuring that the musical elements align seamlessly with their vision for the film. This collaborative approach allows for a more effective and harmonious integration of music into the storytelling process, ultimately contributing to the success of the film as a cohesive artistic expression.
What Sets Me Apart:
I invest in myself and top-notch gear to sound the best for my clients.
Staying humble, relevant, and understanding my value and self-worth are key aspects that set me apart.
Proud Achievements:
Winning a Grammy Award on Beyonce’s hot dance remix “Crazy in Love ” Featuring Jay-Z for outstanding keyboard arrangements, and being a Hall of Fame inductee at The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) are standout moments in my career.
Message to Clients:
I want clients to know that I’m humble, straightforward, and comfortable being a musician. Emphasizing that a “No” is not the end of the world—it can fuel and drive you forward. If you want to elevate to the next level. You have to network, educate yourself, be persistent, and use social media as a tool to promote yourself. Stay creative and study what’s hot in the industry.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
“Absolutely! There was a defining moment in middle school when I was told I couldn’t join the band because I wasn’t deemed good enough. Instead of letting that setback discourage me, it fueled a newfound determination. That experience became the catalyst for my resilience, pushing me to work harder, strive for improvement, and ultimately, it ignited a passion for music that continues to drive me forward.”
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Looking back, I wish I had known about the invaluable resources of formal piano and guitar lessons earlier in my creative journey. Despite having a piano at my grandmother’s house, being self-taught left me yearning for the guidance and expertise that a dedicated teacher could have provided. While I’ve managed to develop my skills independently, the structured guidance from lessons is something I now recognize would have greatly enriched my musical journey.”
