We were lucky to catch up with Gerardo Meza recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gerardo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I have worked is the realization of a community mural with migrants from South Africa in Cairo Egypt. It was amazing to experience how art, and color can bring communities together no matter what language you speak. In 2021 I was invited by the Mexican Embassy, to Cairo Egypt, to coordinate a community mural with migrants from different places of South America that what were in Cairo waiting to cross the border to Turkey (Europe). Not only did I had the chance to visit that country and do some art there, but the satisfaction was to inspire and learn from different people about the importance of Art and its relationship to mental health.

Gerardo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Gerardo Meza, a Surreal artist, a reality voyeour. Upon initial impression, my work may be aesthetically confusing. Instead, this is his take on Surrealism intended to reveal the obscure side of the world, the animal nature in every being, the disgusting and arousing feelings of the subconscious.
As an artist, I only accept the authority of my own conscious without fear and thereby display human beings and beauty in its truest raw form.
As a border bi national artist, reality is perceived different as the rest of the world. Life in our region is unique and that is what makes us great. Art in our region is amazing and our creativity knows no borders.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative person is the bond and connection you create with different members of your community. From doctors, to prisoners… from enlighten individuals to people struggling with mental difficulties, art is a connection we all have to experiment freedom, self fulfillment, and sense of worth in this confusing fascinating world.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Art can be considered a gift or a disease. Whatever you think creative people do, it’s something that can not be stopped. Your personal art is not for everyone and you must understand this at the beginning of your journey. Artist create from and for the soul. Be authentic to yourself and enjoy the ride.
