We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamel Mosely a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamel, thanks for joining us today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
I most often tell people that my heroes are within my family, with special emphasis on my mother. My greatest privilege growing up was being able to see my uncles, aunts, cousins, and father as entrepreneurs. My relatives owned barbershops, contracting agencies, music studios, autobody shops, and even an arcade. Witnessing the success of these businesses along with my mother’s work ethic equipped me with all of the example, confidence, and audacity I’d need to start my journey towards running my own businesses.

Jamel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an entrepreneur, traveler, and award-winning visual storyteller in the mediums of video and photography. I am dedicated to building creative ecosystems that will create jobs and provide equity to underserved and marginalized communities. I am a co-founder of Collectiveffort, a creative agency and coworking space for creatives in Troy, NY, and Upstate’s Cold Brew, a community-focused coffee brand in Troy, NY.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Legacy. Building a better world for my descendants.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Seth Godin – Poke The Box This is required reading for everyone on our team. The reason we love it is because it talks about the importance of just getting started. This book will help you release failure, but also emphasize the importance of a team member who is the “starter” or the person who “pokes the box”. It fits perfectly with Collectiveffort’s mantra of “Do Something”
