We recently connected with Jessie G and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jessie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
The question “What do you think it takes to be successful” is an interesting one to me when it comes to defining what success is exactly. It took me a really long time to find out that feeling successful was much more about finding a healthy balance in my life between all the things I love and goals I strive for. It is so easy to get caught up in defining success as something monetary or tangible. What I have found is that even when you attain some of those types of goals, if the other parts of your life are being neglected you can feel unfulfilled and unsuccessful. Personally I strive to find balance along with success to feel the most fulfilled. Balance also tends to fuel success in every area of your life. For example, if I am getting great sleep, working out in the mornings, eating healthy, bonding with my family, then typically I have great energy to put the work in for my career too. If I am only spending time on my career and neglecting all the other areas of my life, I tend to feel drained, depressed and anxious even if things are going well with my work. Although this works for me, I’m sure everyone is very different in what fuels them and makes them feel successful.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a rock country recording artist based in Nashville, TN. I got into music as a little girl and really just kept pursuing it my whole life. When I got into high school I started to think about music as a career but really couldn’t see how it would be something that could provide for a family so I went to college on a music scholarship but double majored in political science and music. After college I started preparing for law school and soon my life trajectory completely changed. I had the opportunity to open a show for Grammy- Award winning country star Gretchen Wilson. Like out of a movie she gave me such great advice to move out and pursue a music career in Nashville, TN. After some years of mentorship, songwriting, recording, touring with her, I was able to build up my career to a where it is a full time business. I get to tour and record full time for a living. I am so grateful that I took a leap of faith and followed my passion even though it was a very non traditional career to pursue.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is a full time job at first. The whole saying “it takes 10,000 hours” is no joke when it comes to getting how to do it and do it well. Once you put in the work things start to come faster and easier. In the back of your mind it is almost like you are always thinking about it. You are not alone if you dread the daily posts and busting out your phone every minute. One things that really helps is setting aside some time for it and then schedule posts through the week to auto post. I still struggle with it especially when new platforms come along! Just don’t over think it. One day you will look back and see that all that hard work really paid off!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The music industry can be ruthless. Resilience is needed to pursue a career in country music! Sometimes people will tell you you’re not good enough or your songs aren’t good enough. One thing I know for sure is that there are people meant for you and people not meant for you and that IS OKAY! If you love a song or some other art then odds are someone else will love it too. Don’t forget to keep believing in yourself because at the end you will always have your own back. I have been in Nashville, TN for almost 10 years now and all the doors closed in my face really led to the right doors opening up later.
