We recently connected with Hua Ye and have shared our conversation below.
Hua, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
It might be cliche to say but the pandemic deepened my understanding of what I can do as an illustrator who mainly focuses on editorial and advertising illustration.
Waves of mixed emotions, controversies, and conflicts show me that the public is struggling to see the whole picture or tell their stories.
To effectively deliver a narrative, a concept, or an idea, my research skills could help me build a comprehensive and objective understanding of a subject. In addition, my artistic skills with expressive linework and shades can provide a clear image so the meaning behind it can be visually accepted by a wide range of audiences.

Hua, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Chinese illustrator currently based in Atlanta, GA who specializes in editorial and advertising illustration. I use expressive linework and shades to visualize the essential elements of a story in various formats.
I’ve done commissions for clients like publishers and public schools in China. One of the projects is turning the conventional bird-eye view of school maps into an illustrated map with unique characteristics that reflect the school’s culture.
Throughout my experiences, subjects like history, politics, technology, movies, and
comics provide abundant inspiration for my creative work. In addition, I always keeping an efficient and clear communication through a project so client’s ideas and needs are well considered.
Also, my educational journey in MFA and BFA illustration programs has been a
cornerstone of my artistic evolution. It has provided me with the tools and insights to
navigate the intricate realm of visual storytelling with precision and ingenuity.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice
As a unique marker to identify transactions on blockchains, I believe it is a good method for an artist who wants to build a straightforward visual brand.
Using NFT’s high traffic to build a collection of artwork with countless variation.
So the artist could leave a clear impression for different demographics.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I strive to deliver narratives and ideas to a wide audience effectively.
I believe more communication we have between different groups of people, the fewer possible barriers and conflicts there could be.
