We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tamara Kumbula a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamara, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
My first real gig was producing an hour long track for the Celine’s winter fashion show collection for Hedi Slimane. It was so fun and challenging to produce a song that had a story and still allowed the clothing to be the main emphasis of the show. It really helped me grow as a producer.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I moved to LA when I was 19 to get my bachelor’s in music and pursue it professionally. I’m a singer/songwriter and producer and I definitely think that growing up in South Africa has set me apart from a lot of the artists here. Having been influenced by music from a different country has made me more open to exploring different aspects in creating music. I’m most proud of my overall discography and looking back how much I’ve grown as an artist seeing my first release to now, I think a lot of the time it’s easy to get overwhelmed as an artist so I’m working on being more appreciative of my growth and enjoy the journey.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Definitely hearing the finished final mix/master of a song and comparing it with early demos/drafts. I’ve always found that really rewarding hearing how far a song develops.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The book, the art of thinking clearly was really inspiring. It’s definitely helped influence how I approached a lot of my decision making.
