We recently connected with Dr. Tysen Butler and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Tysen, thanks for joining us today. We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
One of my most memorable patient success stories happened when I was in my first couple months of practice. My patient was a teenage athlete with dreams of playing college football. He had been dealing with back pain for about 2 years. He had gone to his primary care doctor, where they took x-rays and told him that he had scoliosis. His scoliosis was not bad enough to require surgery, and he was told that other than wearing a back brace, there wasn’t much they could do for him. He was pretty discouraged when he first came to see me as he was afraid that he was going to have to deal with back pain for the rest of his life. He was also concerned about it affecting his athletic performance because his back pain was always worse following basketball or football practice.
After treating him twice a week for a month, we were able to get him from having daily back pain to being virtually pain free. He is now nearing the end of football season and has a great chance at playing football in college.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up on a farm in central Iowa. I decided to work in healthcare after injuring my knee while playing football during my freshman year of high school. I have 2 brothers and a couple of friends who also suffered sports injuries in high school, so I got a lot of exposure to the long treatment and rehab process necessary for many athletes to return to their sport following an injury. I had a great team of medical professionals that helped me recover from my knee injury, and working with them made me realize that I wanted to do that too. After high school, I attended Iowa State University, majoring in Kinesiology and Health. During that time, I explored many different careers in the healthcare industry before deciding that chiropractic was the best fit for me. After graduating from Iowa State, I moved to Overland Park to attend Cleveland University- Kansas City. After only a couple of months of living in the Kansas City area, I knew this was where I wanted to stay following graduation to open my practice.
Butler Spine & Sport is a chiropractic clinic where we specialize in treating athletes and active people of all ages and skill levels. We focus on getting our patients out of pain and back to the activities they love through chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue work, and therapeutic exercises. Some of our soft tissue work includes dry needling, cupping, muscle scraping, myofascial release, and more. Many people know that chiropractors treat back pain, but we can also help with other things like headaches, shoulder pain, foot pain, and much more. Whether you have a recently sprained ankle or low back pain that has been bothering you for years, we would love to help you get back to feeling your best!
When patients first come to me, they are often discouraged and frustrated. They usually tell me all of the things they can’t do anymore because of their pain. As their treatment progresses, they start to feel better, their mood improves, and they start telling me about the things that they can do again without pain holding them back. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing my patients achieve their goals. Every patient has a different goal- for some it’s being able to pick their child up or sit at their desk without pain. For others, it’s running a marathon or playing college sports. No goal is too big or too small, and we’d love the opportunity to help you achieve it!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my patient base has been treating every patient to the absolute best of my ability and then asking them to spread the word about me and my business. When it comes to their health, people don’t want to go to just anybody. If they hear about me from a friend or family member who I have treated, they are more likely to trust me with their care. I have found that when you treat a patient well, they are grateful and are happy to refer their friends and family. So, while asking patients or clients to tell their friends and family about you might seem uncomfortable at first, I have found it to be a pivotal part of growing my business.
One of the easiest ways you can support a small business is by telling people about them and leaving a review online. We greatly appreciate it!
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Aside being able to successfully diagnose and treat patients, I would say there are 2 characteristics that I have found to be important in succeeding in the chiropractic field.
The first is showing your patients that you care. When a patient knows that you care about getting them feeling better, they are more likely to trust you and commit to your care plan for them. They are also much more likely to refer their friends and family members if they feel like you are invested in your patients.
The second characteristic is ambition. You can’t just sit back and wait for the patients to come to you. You have to work at getting your name out there so people know about your business. There are many ways to do this, whether it be through marketing events, social media, joining community groups, and so many more. At the end of the day, if you aren’t willing to put in the work, it is going to be difficult to have a successful business.
