We recently connected with Emily Treadgold and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Our mission has always been to highlight women in music, whether it’s their taste, their music, or highlighting the sexism they face. We’ve always wanted a safe space for women to feel heard. I feel like women’s tastes and feelings have had a stigma surrounding it, like it’s not as important as a man’s opinion. I feel like, eventually, the tide always shifts, and it comes back around. Look at the immense popularity of Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce. They have the power to control the economy and the power to control the culture, and it’s always been something really important to us.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was writing for a variety of publications before I started my own blog. I wanted a space where I was in control of what we were posting and where I could highlight voices that weren’t being heard as often. I wanted to give people the chance to write about the artists they loved and also highlight artists that weren’t being covered by more popular outlets. A lot of those artists we’ve featured went on to be super famous now, Billie Eilish, Kim Petras, Lewis Capaldi. We’ve been super ahead of the curve on predicting the next big acts. We’ve also put on showcases highlighting women who are really up-and-coming in pop, and that’s always a huge achievement. Giving these smaller artists a platform early in their careers has always been something I’m proud of. I always say I’m a proud mom, and I watch their careers grow so much. I feel the same about our writers. I want everyone to have a chance to feel like their opinions are valid.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’ve always been quick to pivot to the latest in social media. We were fast to get on TikTok, where we found such a beautiful community. We pivoted into being a social media blog instead of an online one. We had always been on Instagram and Twitter, but now we’ve basically shifted to all of our interviews and features being vertical video or social slides. I think publications always come to a crossroads with embracing new platforms. My first months on TikTok were rough, but I found my footing. Even if we’re never the most popular people on TikTok, I’ve loved discovering so many new artists there, and it’s given me an incredible platform and a sense of community.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I would definitely say that just continuing to keep this going takes a lot out of me. I work a day job and various freelance projects. The New Nine was never about money for me. It’s truly a passion project, and it takes a lot of time. During the pandemic, it was hard to find the motivation to keep going, and it definitely gets exhausting and overwhelming, but it continues to bring me joy to highlight these incredible artists. I just try to remember why we do this and find those little and big wins and hold onto those.
