We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Margarita Bajana. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Margarita below.
Margarita, We appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My mission, through photography, is to capture the positive essence of my protagonists in their various walks of life, to show that a positive perspective can help us transcend and attain a better world. It is far too easy to lose one’s way in life, and a good photo has the power to remind us of who we really are.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Margarita Bajana Garcia. I worked with a group of wonderful people creating a social commentary magazine for 21 years. My years as a photographer have allowed me to engage in different types of photography, such as artistic, daily vision, author, documentation, and journalistic reports. Now that I live in the rural United States rather than Ecuador, I also explore nature and breathtaking landscapes, as I do not have access to the same cultural and political content. And since I no longer work for a magazine, I must use my free time to seek out inspirational subjects.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Leaving my former life was not simple. I feared to be where the language is different and opportunities are scarce. Plus, the process of getting my residency was very slow and cumbersome due to new covid regulations, and not having money for an immigration lawyer. I can also tell you that it has not been easy connecting with my new city; it is vastly different from my metropolitan Guayaquil. However, I have found kind people who give me their trust and make me feel at home.
So much change has made me evolve as a person and as a photographer. It feels odd going to a “normal job” everyday, but it gives me direct access to many distinctive people and the goings-on in the area. I still connect with the world remotely and sell my services in digital and physical media.
I hope to exhibit my work on sorority once more, in larger cities, to try to eliminate inequality and allow us to move forward stronger than ever.

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
As one of the public relations liaisons for our magazine, I was always looking for new sponsors. One such sponsor happened to be working in a town more than 15 hours away. We researched itineraries and made the long, overnight journey by bus, and tracked down our tentative client. That adventure paid off. They agreed to be a public patron for a few months, and we were congratulated for our fine work. The experience reinforced the adage that perseverance brings fortune.
