We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nukeyia Pearson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nukeyia below.
Nukeyia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I had very few people around me with success stories that I can relate to. Often we find it in the people we see in media/ family or friends and everyone of the those stories there was a common theme why you want to be successful? and what do you consider success? Somewhere along my journey I felt I wanted to be successful to prove I can have the American Dream too. Success can change in your mind as you mature in life but you have to be consistent, because there will be a lot of setbacks and you will question yourself sometimes feeling like you have imposter syndrome. You have to have a plan as I would say A and B . A lot of times as a business owner we put all our eggs in one basket and that is the fastest way to burn out or go broke. I’ve learned that Plan A don’t always go that route, being able to be flexible is. Also having a time for yourself a healthy balance in your work life of work things you enjoy, and my love of God. Therefore, being organized helps with and any success so that you can keep track of your plans. and lastly having the capital or access to capital so that you can initiate your plan is very important. I started my business with no real plan and it grew faster than I could keep up with. Success in anything you do will be up to you but these are just some blue prints to get you there.
Nukeyia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Nukeyia Pearson. I left a career in nonprofit/ business administration 2019 when I was laid off. I always knew I was going to start my own business .WIth no blue print of business besides my low level of understanding since i went to school for Non profit. I wanted to create a product that was universal . Something everyone could use I went into prayer, I was a new mom and I wanted something my child could use one day . I’m also a person that love to clean so I combined the too. Derx wipes was created from my son and husband name. I wanted to create wipes that was locally made that we could trust limited ingredients that still get the job done. During the pandemic is so happen that was the time were there was limited Wipes in the community. I wanted my brand to be for everyone that wanted something that they can trust. The picture on front is my son. I wanted to people to see this is a family brand. Most big corporation didn’t have the family brand . it more so can be found in any store in America. I wanted to serve communities that didn’t have access to natural wipes. I am a firm believer of quality over quantity I am proud of the fact I can serve all communities in US and create a quality product that that cant be duplicated in every department store.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
One of the things that helped me build my reputation is that people liked the quality of my product. I made a product that clean well and smell well, So that made me stand out my belief again quality over quantity. I think you should find something you love to do and the quality of your product will be your word of mouth.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I had to build clientele through word of mouth people sharing my product , and leaving great reviews and emails. At the time my business was not prepared for the amount of sales I was making. After we starting to make an income we marketed to social media and also other markets to generate more sales. Also for customer loyalty created discounts or other promotions. To grow any small local business it start with local support and creating a quality product that they need.
