We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Isela Grant a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Isela, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Taking a risk at anytime can be scary. Although taking a risk and having it turn into something amazing just makes it so worth it.
Starting my career as a new stylist, I wasn’t sure where to turn, but I knew I wanted to assist an experienced stylist before being on my own with clients. I did just that-started assisting a stylist. As time went on, I started to take clients of my own and loved it. Although, things did not go as I expected. I had expectations of wanting to learn, wanting to experience growth, having someone push me to be better.
I had to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. I wasn’t growing in the position I was in. It was time for me to search for a place to grow into the stylist I wanted to be. It took a lot in me to look elsewhere. This is where I started, where do I even go from here? I took a leap of faith, applying at The Colour Room Salon here in San Antonio. I was so nervous even looking elsewhere.
It took a lot to realize I had to step away from clients in order to hone in on my craft. But that was apart of taking the risk. Was it scary? Yes. Did I do it? Sure did.
How did it turn out? AMAZING. Over the last 7 months, I’ve learned color techniques, cutting techniques, extensions, etc. I’m extremely happy with my decision as it’s allowed so much growth and so many opportunities. I can’t even begin to thank my mentor, Jess for everything. Taking this risk has been a life changing one for myself and my family.
Take a step back, look at the bigger picture. It’s okay to take a few steps back in order to take your career 10 steps further. Take the risk!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I became apart of the beauty industry in 2020, when I began cosmetology school.
A little about me, I’m a wife to an Airman and mama to a sweet little girl and boy. I’m a Texas native but the Air Force brought us to San Antonio almost 4 years ago! I enjoy all things color and extensions. When I’m not doing hair, I’m spending time with my little family, going to target, or watching my fav-reality tv!
I am a stylist at The Colour Room Salon. It means so much to me to get to transform your hair into something beautiful!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to make a big pivot in my career when leaving my first salon. Making this pivot allowed for growth in this industry along with allowing for growth in my personal life.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Others can put you down, but it’s telling with how you stand back up. In this industry, I have learned there are women who tear down and women who build you up. I unfortunately had to go through being torn down mentally and emotionally when entering the industry and it would make me wonder if I was meant for this. After leaving and being surrounded by such wonderful women that are supportive and literally built me back up from my first experience-I know I can do it. I got back on my feet and kept it moving.
