We were lucky to catch up with Joe Tyler recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joe, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I remember trying to figure out how the set of Mr Rogers Neighborhood operated when i was 5, and thought how cool it would be to be there and just watch. So being part of a production has always been of interest to me.
Joe, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Joe Tyler, I’m a performer from Philadelphia. After a decade of primarily standup comedy, I’ve spent the past 4 years focusing on a career in acting while still finding time to do comedy and host events whenever i can. I’ve hosted comedy shows, bar events, and movie premieres. I’ve recently worked with colleges such as Emerson, Harvard University, Boston College, Boston University, NYU, and University of the Arts (phila), as well as independent film makers as an actor on 30 projects in the past 12 months.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
For acting, the only goal is to get better. To open myself to unfamiliar or uncomfortable emotions. To empathize with someone who only exists on paper enough to accurately speak for them.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the least that our communities can do is understand the art that is being made within it. Get to know what types are films are being made by its local film makers, what visual arts are being promoted in its galleries. Listen to the music coming from the bars and from the streets. Thats how you get to know the members of your community, by the art it produces.
And I’ll challenge you further:
1. Go to a indie film premiere in your area and ask a question during the Q&A
2. Buy 1 locally made product (I enjoy hot sauce by A Good Jawn in Philly)
3. Give a street performer 60 seconds of your time
4. Go to a gallery and ask a painter the story behind a piece
You don’t owe this to your community or its artists, but you owe it to yourself to learn more about where you all call home.
