We recently connected with Justin Shider and have shared our conversation below.
Justin, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew that I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path the first time I stepped foot in a recording studio. Watching my father, his brother and their friends create and rehearse music together was very inspirational. Though I was young I was observant and knew I wanted to be apart of this environment some day At about nine or ten years old my father took me to my uncles studio to learn “somethings” that’s when I first laid my eyes on a digital audio workstation (DAW). My uncle had a large analog studio with all of these big boards, amps and other equipment I couldn’t pronounce; but instead he sat me in front of this big beautiful computer with a key board on a desk and he said “nephew this is all you need right here, this is the future, learn how to use this and you’ll be good man.” Still to this day I use the same equipment, its updated obviously but that was one of the days I knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally as Music Producer and Engineer.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Justin Shider aka JussBeatzz. My entire life I wanted to be successful in the music industry. I was at the age three when I played my first instrument, that was drums. From then I played drums in my families church, where I currently play bass guitar now.
At the age 15 me and a childhood friend had this great Idea that we’d start a business providing our services locally by opening up a media production company. It was a success for the time being. We had a full running production company before we both graduated high school; developing recording artist using our services that were in audio production, videography, photography, and performance productions. In that time I learned how to run a business, and how to share my services in a professional manner thanks to the guidance and mentor-ship I received as I grew. This was my greatest successor, until it came to an end.
Today I work as a freelance musician, producer, engineer and artist. I realized in my journey it is not easy to fulfill your dreams when you cannot invest in them. As an artist we must realize we are providers in our profession. The uniqueness about what we do is that we create from our hearts hoping that someone will enjoy our work as much as we do. Investing your hard earned money and time is a lot especially when you do not know what the results will be after releasing a project. Advice for others that I give to myself everyday is to “Keep Going” I even have this tattooed on my left forearm. Never give up on your desires because they are what drives our dreams, be cautious of the energy that you put into your work and into yourself because both needs equal attention. Love yourself just as much as you love your work and believe that your investments will be returned to you ten times more!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is simple, and that is to be great in the music industry. In my time I’ve realized my passion is in composing, production and artist development. I want my music to be heard and valued, and when it is heard I want people to know that it’s work that I’ve created or played a part in.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is putting your work out and having it criticized. It is a known fact that all criticism is good criticism. I see that this is true because its a major part of my growth today. This is something that I struggle with because of my connection to my work, I want my music to be heard but I fear what the results might be. I’m currently learning to be more open with my art simply just playing my music for my family and friends and getting their insight, this has been very helpful for me because it makes me more confident about my talents and it drives me to Keep Going!
