We were lucky to catch up with Meghan Bellamy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Meghan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I tend to overthink, but sometimes you just need to take a leap of faith. When I quit my previous job before pursuing a fulltime creative career I was only making enough money to survive. However, I knew with the extra time I would gain I would be able to expand my business. Luckily this gamble paid off and I’m in a much better position now.
My latest risk is renting a studio space in order to be able to upgrade my laser to a much larger size! I’m excited to see how this risk plays out as well.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Meghan Bellamy and I own Bellamy Home Studio where I create calming wood landscape pieces inspired by nature to quiet your anxiety. I also create DIY paint by number kits on wood to help you take time for yourself to be creative. I really love that I’m able to help others try something new, I often hear from my customers that completing their kits have inspired them to do other creative projects. I’m so happy to be able to provide an outlet for others to relax and enjoy the process of painting.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The first time I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I said Artist and the response I received as a child was that you can’t make a living being an artist. Those words stuck with me and I never said Artist again when asked that question instead I said Lawyer, Dentist, Engineer, etc. anything except Artist. I felt shame when I was told that I couldn’t support myself as an Artist and it made me take a left turn and disconnected me from that as a possibility. I went through many different jobs that I wasn’t happy doing as they weren’t creative. That is when I came back to my creativity and decided to start my own path and pursue my first dream of being an Artist.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is when I complete an original piece and after I look at it I think I can’t believe I created that! The feeling of accomplishment and joy is truly amazing. I also love hearing from clients that my artwork makes them feel calm by looking at it. With so much stress and anxiety going around if I can add a little bit of peace and happiness into someone’s day I really appreciate that.
