We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ari Domingo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Ari, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?

Being the owner of a construction company is quite the ride. I’ve often found myself pondering the question of whether I’d be happier with a regular job – you know, the kind where you clock in at 9 and out at 5, and then forget about work until the next day. Let me share a recent moment when I had one of these “grass-is-greener” musings.

To paint the picture, I had just let one of my project managers go, was swamped with multiple construction projects, deadlines looming like storm clouds, and my office desk buried under blueprints and to-do lists that seem to breed overnight. One evening, after a particularly long and exhausting day, I’m sitting there, thinking, “Wouldn’t it be nice to just have a stable 9-to-5 gig?” I imagined the bliss of leaving work behind at the office door and enjoying weekends without worrying about project schedules and employee dynamics.

In that moment, the idea of a steady paycheck and the simplicity of a routine job sounded like a dream. No more juggling contractors, no more worrying about permitting review times, and definitely no more mediating between feuding employees – you get the picture! The thought of having a clear line between work and personal life was incredibly tempting.

But then, I took a step back and remembered why I dove into the world of construction entrepreneurship in the first place. I rekindled the passion that drove me – the thrill of seeing raw materials transform into magnificent structures, the sense of accomplishment when overcoming challenges, and the joy of creating something impactful for the community. Sure, dealing with employee issues and the constant hustle are part of the package, but so is the freedom to call the shots, shape the company culture, and lead a fantastic team.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible courage and determination of everyone who has ever tried to start their own business. It’s no small feat – the sleepless nights, the endless challenges, and the relentless pursuit of success. The road is tough, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. In the end, I realized those daydreams of a 9-to-5 routine were just momentary escapes from the chaos. The challenges of running a business are tough, no doubt, but they come with invaluable lessons and incredible moments of pride.

So, while I occasionally wonder about the road not taken, I’m all in as a business owner. The fulfillment I get from watching my construction projects come to life and the camaraderie with my team make it a wild and totally worthwhile journey. I’m a construction nerd. My journey into this field began with a genuine love for architecture, engineering, and a desire to transform blueprints into tangible structures. I graduated college with a degree in Civil Engineering and immediately went to work for some of the biggest general contractors in the country. I took what I learned from those companies over the years and turned my passion into a successful construction business.

It’s funny that these days if you just do what you say you’re going to do, you’re already ahead of most of your competition. Treat your clients with respect, be honest, be fair, and people will take notice.
