We recently connected with Ruben Scott and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ruben , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Ah, the spark for my creative journey didn’t hit me like a lightning bolt; it was more of a gradual realization. Growing up, my family had this tradition of gathering around the TV to watch the annual John Lewis Christmas adverts. You know, those heartwarming, one-to-two-minute emotional roller coasters. There was something magical about them, something that transcended the screen and reached deep into our hearts.
I vividly remember the first time I noticed the impact these short films had on my family. Every year, without fail, we’d be teary-eyed, wrapped up in a shared emotional experience sparked by a mere minute or two of storytelling. Witnessing the power of visual narrative to elicit such genuine and visceral reactions fascinated me.
In those moments, surrounded by the warmth of my family and the glow of the screen, I realized that I wanted to be the architect of such emotions. I wanted to craft stories that could resonate with people on a profound level, just like those John Lewis adverts did for us. It was then that I set my sights on a path that would allow me to not just capture moments on film but to craft experiences that lingered in the hearts and minds of those who witnessed them. And so, my journey as a director began, fueled by the desire to change perspectives, make an impact, and evoke emotions that transcend the screen.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began my journey in a quiet countryside, armed with nothing but a camera and a desire to explore the world through my lens. Growing up surrounded by sheep and nature, the bustling film industry was a distant dream. Undeterred, I started experimenting, capturing moments with my family in the garden, chasing the beauty that unfolded around me.
The turning point came when I decided to dive headfirst into my passion and enrolled at Vancouver Film School. Suddenly, the world of filmmaking opened up before me like a blank canvas waiting to be painted. The knowledge and skills I gained there fueled my eagerness to create, to transform ideas into visual narratives that resonate.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my perspective as a director, fostering a supportive environment for artists is crucial for a flourishing creative community. Firstly, practicing kindness and empathy within society is paramount. Recognizing the vulnerability that comes with artistic expression, a compassionate approach can make a world of difference. Beyond that, actively engaging with and supporting each other’s work is a powerful way to uplift artists. Attend performances, screenings, or exhibitions, and share your thoughts and appreciation.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely, my creative journey as a director is fueled by a fervent desire to instigate change and provoke new perspectives. I see filmmaking not just as a craft but as a powerful vehicle for altering perceptions and making audiences pause for thought. With every project, my mission is to challenge the status quo, to prompt viewers to see beyond the surface and reconsider their preconceptions. I believe in the transformative power of storytelling, and I aspire to create narratives that linger, making people think twice and fostering a meaningful impact on how they perceive the world around them.
