We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Will Carter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Will, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
We took a different approach with our latest album compared to our previous works to stand out from the current norms in the music industry. I value the way the energy and chemistry of the band can be felt sonically on the record. That personal, authentic and raw touch of a live band can often be lost in translation due to the style of today’s digital recordings.
Recently, we teamed up with Visible Changes and performed for their breast cancer awareness event hosted by the non-profit, Thair For You. This organization provides wigs to women battling cancer so that during this already difficult time, they don’t have to sacrifice their feeling of self-confidence. The event was beautiful and touching, and we made many lasting relationships because of our involvement.
We also just released our latest single, “Just Wait And See”, to radio with an accompanying music video. The song is my favorite on our upcoming album as it’s exceptionally relatable. We’ve all been told at one point in our lives that we weren’t good enough, that we weren’t going to make it, etc. The song is a reminder to the listeners to tell their haters to “Just Wait And See”. The single has been flying up the Texas charts and the music video was picked up by CMT.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I lost my father when I was 13 years old. Being the oldest of four children, my parents put me in tap, jazz, ballet and gymnastics at the age of three to learn agility and balance. My father’s intention was to prep me with these skills to be a professional athlete. He was 6 feet 4 inches tall and 250 pounds, while my mother is only 5 feet 3 inches tall; she’s beautiful but she’s tiny! I didn’t quite grow up to be a professional athlete, but I picked up music at three years old and was beyond fascinated by it. I believe my father was also captivated by music since it was something he didn’t have the passion or talent to do.
Dad always supported me in his own way despite our family not having the financial means to invest in the music. He would drive me around the state to perform anywhere I could get booked. When I learned he had terminal cancer and could no longer work to support the family, I recorded an album to raise money. The album did well, and I watched my father listen to that album on repeat during the last two months of his life. Seeing how proud it made him after his continuous support over the years, paired with my own passion for music, has fueled me to pursue the career that I have now. I will continue to do so for as long as I am physically able to perform and sing.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Losing my father, who was my biggest supporter, at an early age was a huge blow to my progress in music and in life. I could have given up then, but instead decided to double down and keep pressing on. I’ve been through many ups, downs, highs, lows and heartbreaks throughout my music career. It’s a tough industry where you’re constantly under a microscope and people’s opinions are subjective. Without resilience and strength, one will never fully make it in the music industry.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Crafting music is not just a passion of mine; it’s a calling. It’s a pursuit that I owe to myself to nurture and share with the world. Moreover, it’s a tribute to my late father whose unwavering support fueled my musical journey. His belief in me echoes through every piece I create and is reflected through every audience I entertain.
