We recently connected with LaQuan Wilson and have shared our conversation below.
LaQuan, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Last year, I was down to my last dollar. Rent and car payment was past due. Took a chance betting on myself since that’s all I had left. Doordashed between two cities in North Carolina: Fayetteville and Raleigh. I loved being a doordasher since it never really felt like work even though it was very time consuming. The time I spent at home was creating content. I would stack up to at least 4 videos almost everyday and post them while out doordashing. This is betting on myself because majority of the people would have called me crazy and told me to get a regular job. I believed what I was doing was possible but I just have to remain focused and trust the proccess. After 6 months, my videos started taking off. The feeling was unreal how the views just came swarming in back to back. All my old videos that was sitting at 1k views were now reaching millions. Once I had enough money saved, I quit doordashing and made content my full time career. I took a risk that many people wouldnt because they afraid of what will happen if it doesnt work out. Luckily, I do have two college degrees and side hustle to fall back on but I dont ever want to feel like I’m working for only a paycheck. I want to work for the joy and experience. The people who come into work everyday happy and smiling because they love their jobs, thats how I want to feel.

LaQuan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Summer 2016 was very depressing for me. I went from living in LA, working at Motown/Capitol Records, working with many talented people in the industry to moving back home to Fayetteville, NC where nothing was going on. If this how superstars feel when they have 15 minutes of fame, I feel for them because life can treat you so well that you forget the ugly side of things. It was one day where I stumbled across content creators through Youtube and Instagram. I always thought you had to be with an agency to get noticed and make money. Once I learned anybody can do this, I hopped on immediately. I took of all my experience over the years of graphic designing, editing, and filming; poured it into my own brand. As I grew my brand, I learned about understanding people and how social media works. One of things I can say I solve for my followers and audience is depression. I’m able to relate to them because I was in those shoes. Now that I’ve made it this far, my next focus is on how to really give back to them because they mean so much to me. I wouldnt be a successful content creator today without them.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
There are alot of non-creatives who told me this wouldnt work or to get a real job because I’m wasting my time. This was all before the pandemic. Now today, you see alot of people trying to start their own business and not work for somebody else. People thought I was crazy for thinking the way I thought but now its cool and looked at as a trend. Its one of those moments where you got laugh about it and keep it moving. I want the non-creatives to understand what I did to get here took time and work. The only difference is I’m building my own brand and not somebody else’s.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Feeling like I was suppose to have my time when I wanted it to happen and it simply doesnt work that way. Some people get lucky and I wasn’t one of those. Your moment will happen when its suppose to happen and you cant rush these things. I remember over the years watching people blow up fast meanwhile my channel is going nowhere. It may take you 5 years before you see the results you want to see.
