We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tammy Dyson Roach a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tammy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe that Leading, Working and Problem Solving with Confidence and Genuinely Believing, and Taking Pride and Value in what you are executing as a Business Is Key to Success. I learned from selling Mary Kay Cosmetics, almost thirty years ago, that if you are Excited and Truly Believe in the Product / Service, it will get others excited and wanting it also.
I always come into a Wedding Set Up With a Relaxed and Smiling Exterior. ( Even when that may not be the Interior Vibe ! ) It Penetrates Others and Sets a Mood that Every thing Is All Good. As a Floral Designer, In Mostly Wedding Situations, You want everyone else Confidant that you have your end of things. It helps to stay Confidant, Relaxed and Smiling, even through Little Blips that come up. That Way it may not be noticed and can be worked out more fluidly.
Tammy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I entered the Florist Business a Bit Over Twenty Years ago, when I realized Corporate was not for me on any long term level. What I did not realize, was that I was finding my new Long Term Career. I answered an add in a local paper, to run a Floral Shop, Down Town Aiken SC. I had a background in Management and knew I could handle that part of the Store, and I felt like I could be Creative, and Execute the Daily Tasks of Running a Full Service Florist. I was very Successful in Helping Build The Local Floral Shop Back Up To its Full Potential, and I gained a great bit of knowledge for the Industry.
After Four Years of that Sinuation, We moved to Hilton Head SC and I started a Job as a Designer in a Full Service Floral Shop. The Primary Business was High End Weddings With Full Service Options. We did several high end wedding every weekend during the peak seasons and decorated large Private Clubs and Shopping Centers For Holidays. We Also tended to Daily Floral Deliveries as well as Maintaining Weekly Corporate Florals, in the Surrounding area. Needless to say, I gained a Ton Of Knowledge from this Situation.
After three Years and Not Finding our Home to be that area, We moved back to my home town of Aiken SC, The Home we found had a Disconnected ” Mother In Law Suite ” Attached to a Large Garage Area. As Soon as I saw the place, I knew that we had found our Forever Home and My New Business! Right off the bat We Ripped Carpet Up and Changed things around to at least start the process of Creating Dyson Designs.
Once I did my First Wedding, it all started to roll from there. Word of mouth was my very best way to my next Event.
I have always labeled myself as Unique Floral, and I am recognized for that. I hear all the time, You Just Dont See That Anywhere Else! It may be from basically self teaching in the beginning. I developed my own flair!
I have had Dyson Designs now sense 2009. I still meet clients and do all my design work, Independently, and in the same Studio. I have sense filled my garage area with shelf after shelf of hard goods, that are an extension of my services. I Limit myself to the amount of Wedding I will take, in order to give all of my personal attention to that weddings details. I have Day Of Assistance for Set Up. We do everything from Altar Areas To Bridal Party Bouquets and Body Work, To Centerpieces to the Smallest of Important Details. I try not to miss much, even when a little, goes a long way. My Special care To Details is never missed by a client. I hear a lot of ” More that I imagined ” and ” Above and Beyond “. I take very Humble, Pride in my Business and Its Just as Personal To Me as to My Client. I also stay very Thankful and I Never Stop Appreciating how I have come into this! That also shows in my work, and Keeps Me Smiling! Maybe what also sets me apart .
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When I moved back to Aiken SC I did not want to take a job that was a conflict of interests to my starting up, Dyson Designs, So I created another Business to gain initial capital, and to not take out a loan. I , with the help and advise of a Friend, I started a Commercial Cleaning Company. My Friend , who already has an established cleaning company was offered a New Location, but she could not over extend into the area. She knew I was looking or a Job and Approached me about taking on the New Account as my own Business. I became Licensed and Insured, bought Vacuums and Cleaning Supply’s and was the Owner and Only Employee, at the time, of Corporate Clean. I ended up with Several Accounts and Several Employees. After about Four Years, It Served Its Purpose and I could not do both, So I bowed out of Corporate Clean, ON Good Terms, and hit the floor running with Dyson Designs and No Debt.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
