We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kerry Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kerry thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Joyful PR was created and founded to create a space of joy for brands and their consumers with traditional and nontraditional PR. Joyful PR specialty is in the fashion, lifestyle, beauty and sports industries. Joyful PR puts inclusion and diversity at the forefront of everything they do from hiring as the company and the clients that are signed on. Joyful PR is about using their years of experience to create PR and Marketing initiatives that are outside of the box. Diversity and Inclusion is of utmost importance not just for those I know but for everyone nationally and globally.

Kerry, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in LA and it is a city I love. I was in college at Cal State LA and needed an internship. My first internship was in Entertainment PR and it was one that made me realize I was in love and passionate about PR. I just went from there and worked for some different agencies, moved and worked in New York, lived in San Francisco for a year then came back to LA and have been in PR for 12 years now and still so passionate about it. I started Joyful PR in June of 2020 because I felt a calling to do so to help up and coming brands especially in the times we are in and wanted to make my company about inclusivity and joy, two things that I have always lived by.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I feel like with most of us, Covid-19 has forced a lot of us to pivot including myself. I had been working at a PR agency while also working for a fashion client on my own. I then decided to go in-house with my fashion client as that happened, the pandemic hit and that job went away. I then was working with a colleague on a project basis. At that point, I had already been thinking about starting my own agency, but with all of this happening and the pandemic, I knew I just had to take the pivot and go for it. I am so glad I did because it sparked so much joy professionally and gave me so much confidence in my personal life.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I am someone who struggles with anxiety every day. I think in the past my anxiety I was pushed for any desire I had to start a business, but as I worked on myself and my anxiety. I saw that my resilience was stronger than I knew and that is when the thought of starting a business started coming up and didn’t go away. So finally, I told myself I needed to do this not just for myself but for others.
I still struggle with anxiety and it can get in the way of working and my business, but I just tell myself I can get this through and give myself time to take care of my mental health, which is so important for all of us.
