Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicholas Rose. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nicholas , appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
NRoseArtStudio is an international contemporary art hub by Jamaican artist and educator yours truly Nicholas Rose. Our mission is to create, showcase and educate others about Unique artworks and or art projects for the local and global market.
This mission is very important to me because I see art as the heartbeat of every society. And I feel it’s my duty to align our creative works in a way that may bring love and unity to the rest of the world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a native of Trelawny Jamaica, where I did not grow up seeing or knowing much about Visual Arts. I then went on to DeCarteret College high school in Mandeville, Manchester, where I was first introduced to visual arts in a serious way. I also saw my first art exhibition there and was completely amazed. I then went on to do tertiary studies in Kingston at the Mico Teachers College and the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and there I was further exposed to the overwhelming possibilities surrounding visual arts.
I got into the industry over 15 years ago, doing portraits of individuals close to me. However, I developed a greater discipline to the business when I met my first lecturer Mr. Ewan Peart, then the Great Barrington Watson and one of my mentors Mr. Phillip Thomas. They all shared a similar story to follow their passion in art, and that there was nothing else they could see themself doing except art. I too shared a similar destiny and I knew that there are others however due to the lack of opportunities and appreciation for art in Jamaica, it has become a need for the few accomplished artists to become beacons for other younger artists.
The products I create range from the traditional drawings, paintings (murals, portraits, landscapes etc.), sculptures, illustrations, to the more digital work such as graphic design, animation, video productions and multimedia media works etc. Once you can dream of an art project ‘NRoseArtStudio’ can bring that idea to life.
We solve a variety of problems for our clients, from personal/household decor problems to small and large scale commercial projects including digital campaigning or public mural paintings or sculptures/monuments. We will help our clients with simple things such as finding a painting for a blank wall or developing a new concept area layout for a room, to transforming an entire outdoor corporate space.
What Separates us from others is the extreme focus on quality and originality in our productions. We pay keen attention to global trends, and we do in-depth research to ensure that all our clients get the most authentic product or service they can possibly desire.
I am most proud of the diversity of our teams and the projects and clients we engage with. We have worked on illustrating a story book of our past, Prime Minister the Most Honorable Portia Simpson Miller and during covid-19 we created the largest mural in Downtown Kingston, at the time, which focused on the history of Duke Street and the development of Kingston, Jamaica. Looking back at the process and end products of projects like these, has inspired and fueled the passion and dedication in me to use visual art as a binding agent to bring people of all backgrounds together in one unison and love.
I want our fans and followers to know that we’re fully committed to bring all their dreams and ideas of any art concepts or designs to reality.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative for me, is meeting new people from all over the world, of different backgrounds, and seeing everyone drawn to one specific artwork or project. Then also seeing how they react and relate to these creative works, is just priceless. Despite the different backgrounds and personalities, we all share so many experiences and these similarities and oneness in ideas across the world is extremely fascinating to me. I also find the ability to travel across the world and to share with other artists in exhibitions and art fairs is also very rewarding and inspires and fuels my creativity and ability to bring about new and fresh ideas.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The particular goal or mission that keeps driving my creative journey is the need to bring about greater understanding, appreciation and awareness of the importance and value of the visual arts in healing our Nations. My mission also involves inspiring and painting a message of One Love and the possibilities in creating a utopian society. I tend to use various sorts of symbolism and or historic events in my works to convey the need for unity in today’s society and in the future to come..
