Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Austin Powell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Austin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking a significant risk has led me to some unexpected and thrilling rewards. After nearly a decade of military service, I decided to transition into civilian life, leaving many wondering about my next steps. In Fall 2023, I embarked on a journey to one of the world’s most prestigious art schools, thanks to a combination of good fortune and unwavering determination.
This all started a few years ago when I won a military talent competition with the support of some friends. However, the true prize was the liberation I felt through creativity, reigniting my passion for art and pushing me to explore various mediums, including digital art. As my skills improved, so did my ambition, leading me to consider a career in art. But doubts plagued me: Would I find the right school? Could I excel in a specialization? Would art provide a sustainable livelihood?
While playing video games one day, I pondered the creation of in-game characters and environments, setting off a quest for answers that eventually led me to Ringling College of Art & Design, located just a short drive from my home. Their “Game Art” program seemed almost too good to be true. Although the cost of private education initially discouraged me, I eventually explored more affordable local options before being drawn to Ringling’s open house. There, I learned about “merit scholarships,” which seemed like my sole chance to attend without burdening my family with debt.
With newfound determination, I hastily submitted my application, laden with self-doubt. The turning point came just before Christmas when I received an acceptance letter and a merit scholarship award of $56,000, coupled with my veterans’ tuition benefits, enabling me to attend one of the world’s top art schools without incurring any expenses. This experience has reinforced the belief that taking risks and pursuing one’s dreams can lead to unforeseen and rewarding outcomes, emphasizing the importance of trusting one’s instincts and following one’s passion.
Austin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I aim to solve the visual design and storytelling challenges that game developers face, ultimately contributing to the overall player experience.
What sets me apart from others in the field is my dedication to storytelling and world-building within the games I work on. I believe that every game should offer players a captivating and visually stunning universe to explore. My attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and commitment to understanding the essence of the game’s narrative set me apart as an artist. I take great pride in my ability to breathe life into game worlds and characters, making them memorable and engaging for players.
What I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know about me is that I’m not just an artist; I’m a storyteller who uses art as my medium. I’m deeply committed to collaborating with game developers to make their visions come to life. Whether it’s crafting a unique character design, creating breathtaking environments, or developing concept art that captures the essence of a game, I’m here to contribute to the magic of game development.
