Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Darci Roberts. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Darci, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Being an entrepreneur or business owner takes a huge risk. You have to trust in yourself like you have never before you have to give into the idea that patients equals perfection. I worked 10+ years as a security supervisor. It was great fun way to pay the bills, but definitely not nothing that my heart was set on nothing that I wanted to see myself doing long-term. After getting a concrete idea of what I wanted to do with myself, and with the support of my husband, who I owe all my success to I was able to make my dream a reality. After realizing security was not in my heart, the job became more miserable. I left security and pursued my passion for permanent make up and eyelash services. I took the risk and quit. Of course at this time my husband supported me and guided me along the way. I am a very independent “can do it myself“ kind of person to put that much trust in a person I felt was a risk for me personally, but a risk that I was more than grateful to take. I began my training for permanent, make up completed my training for permanent make up shortly after training for eyelash technician completed my training for eyelash technician passed all of my State boards and exams. Now I am able to maintain clients that I have received through my training and live my best life. All because I took the rest by quitting my day job, trusting in myself, trusting in my network, my direct support system and never taking no for an answer by taking all of these risks. I was able to build the schedule that suitable for myself and my children do what I love to do. Meeting so many different individuals are part of the same community. Putting my trust in God and my husband. Pretty One Parlor is coming along beautifully and because of my patience and trusting the process it is coming out perfect.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, my name is Darci. I am a permanent makeup artist and an eyelash technician. in 2021 Sierra Gates from loving hip-hop, I flown to Chicago to take her micro blading class there is where I found my passion for permanent make up when I came back to home. I continued my day job as a security supervisor, and was looking into what I needed to do to become licensed in the state of Minnesota where I reside in 2023 Minnesota Brow Lash & Medspa Academy they offered a six day program as well as the apprenticeship, which is what I needed to become licensed, I took the six day program completed my 200 hours during my apprenticeship I wanted to do other things that would keep my books kind of filled and busy so I also took a small Tattoo class towards the end of my apprenticeship. I began an eyelash course Where I completed my 38 hour, eyelash technician course, State boards, and PSI. In order for me to pursue my dream at doing permanent, make up and eyelash extensions, I had to quit my job of nearly 11 years at first I couldn’t believe it but overtime I loved it. I had more free time. I was able to build a schedule spend more time with my three children. My life wasn’t so stressful. in 2016 I showed interest in eyelash extensions. I love the process of them. I love the way they looked. I love the way they made me feel everything I started out as self taught and taking models, there is where I developed my business as sinful beauty due to the lack of certifications and licensure and training. I didn’t want to do too much so simple beauty was short, but never forgotten. I worked even harder to perfect my craft and be able to do what I love to do I still have bills to pay I had to take care of so I went back to security fell in the slump for a while, and 2021 that changed in 2023 the game was over February 2023 is when my journey started and my steps to become licensed and certified have begun by the end of October 2023 I completed my 200 hour apprenticeship for my body artist license to do permanent make up and small/fine line tattoos, I also completed my 38 hour eyelash technician fundamental course and Minnesota state required psi during my training I developed Pretty One Parlor and the rest is still in perfection.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
From 2015 to 2023 I have always did makeup and eyelash extensions for real close personal associates, friends and family as side hustle. my full-time job was a security site supervisor at a Medical Center. I always had a passion for make up so I was definitely that security supervisor who was always done up nails done hair done make up done lashes done. In the security world they definitely did not like it but that’s just who I am and it made me feel comfortable. And 2022 I really started to dislike security going to work was miserable. I can find it in my husband one night and told him about what I really wanted to do before I know it. I quit my job and pursued my dream, even though I had prior training, I wanted to start fresh. I went to Minnesota, Brow Lash & Medspa Academy, my body, artist license and my lash technician license. I am the CEO of Pretty One Parlor where I do permanent make up and eyelash extensions. I am able to have my own schedule which makes more time for my children and family. I enjoy every moment of what I do. And I’m still able to travel and do all the other hobbies that I enjoy doing patience equals perfection.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Keeping in touch with clients is something that is so important during my apprenticeship. I made it my duty to keep in touch with all of my clients by sending them my handwritten thank you card and a little and some stickers letting them know how much I appreciate them and if they have any questions, make sure they have my contact information clients that are models. I usually give them more of a discount just so they can maintain their services because I enjoy what I do I essentially would do it for free, However, never lose sight of your Worth. Just like your clients they are very valuable. They are very worth it and worthy because they help build your brand build your business build you up as artist.
