We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Manni Mora a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Manni, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I am in the process of crafting a book centered around a unique and enigmatic character named Starseed. The story delves into the journey of a lost soul navigating the intricate and often bewildering labyrinth of the human experience. The book will be read like you are reading an intimate personal journal. It will almost feel forbidden. I used to paint this character whenever I was going through something. I knew something was different about these paintings, because when I would take these paintings with me to art markets and have them displayed at galleries people would approach me and share their stories with me. At times these moments would lead to tears. Because of this character I was able to connect on a deeper level with people all over the city and online.
I am also working with a team trying to bring this story to life through a unique pop-up immersive art experience. More details to come.
Manni, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Manni Mora, also known as Beautifully Chaotic Art. I was born to immigrant parents in Laredo, Texas, I am a first-generation American multimedia queer artist, based in Austin, Texas. My art career began early 2019 after some convincing from my Family and Friends. Reason why I was so reluctant in the beginning was due to the fact that I didn’t want to make it about the money. Because of this, the proceeds benefited local charities. To me I saw it as a form of therapy which is why I am a big advocate for mental health. In early 2021, I realized this was unsustainable due to high cost of materials and shipping so I couldn’t continue this path. However, I still make sure to donate paintings to raise funds for local organizations and donate to important causes when they arise. I am a believer of when you do good in the world, good comes back to you. Since starting I have been given the opportunity to have my work and myself featured in multiple publications, both online and in print. Had my work in galleries, museums and received an Artist Residency.
Through the years I have faced the challenges of rejection and uncertainty, as many aspiring artists do. However, these hurdles became the steppingstones to my personal triumphs. My story is a testament to the power of persistence and self-belief. I learned that success in the art world is not just about artistic talent but also about adaptability. Do not get me wrong, I do not believe I am all that and a bag of chips. I am just proud of how far I have gotten considering my humble beginnings and for being able to have some success in an art world already full of amazing talented artists. I am just truly grateful that people believe in me and continue to appreciate my work.
Growing up as a queer individual in a multicultural environment, I developed a deep appreciation for the complexities of identity and the beauty of diversity. My work often delves into the intricate interplay of cultural heritage, gender, mental health and sexuality. Through a vivid and thought-provoking use of colors and symbolism, I aim to challenge societal norms and perceptions, encouraging viewers to embrace their own complexities and celebrate the richness of human diversity. I invite everyone to see art beyond the artist, encouraging others to embrace their own inner self and discover the beauty that can emerge from the most unanticipated corners of the human psyche. I thrive on pushing myself and boundaries of traditional art forms, weaving chaos and beauty into every piece. From paintings to sculptures and crafts. My portfolio is a fusion of abstract expressionism, surrealism, and contemporary art. I am also good at not taking things too seriously and make room to create fun silly pieces that make you giggle.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The privilege of connecting with people who resonate with my art is a truly profound and humbling experience. That is the biggest reward. When someone connects with my art, it’s like a silent conversation that occurs on a deeper, unspoken level. The art becomes a bridge, allowing us to communicate through feelings, thoughts, and experiences, transcending language and cultural differences. It’s an incredible feeling to know that my work has touched someone’s heart or mind, sparking emotions and contemplation.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
People can support artist by giving them the freedom to create without censorship since it is essential for the flourishing of art and the enrichment of our culture. Art has always been a powerful medium for self-expression, reflection, and social commentary. Which is why I am part of the, Banned Art Collective. A group of artists with different backgrounds and point of views unified with the same mission to build a space where overlooked artists who have been turned away because of the color of their skin, sexual orientation or what some may deem their work as too “proactive” or “offensive” we want to disrupt and make a difference.
