We were lucky to catch up with Marie Flores recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
What I think it takes to be successful is to not judge your self against what others in your industry are doing. Keep going on your own path and even when you don’t think you are doing that great, you never know who is watching you. I have found that friends look up to me and love to see what I am doing, even when I am in a slump and don’t think I am doing that great in my business, these comments and complements always steer me back on track. Keep doing what you love and that alone is a success!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Several years ago, my husband and I began really working on our home, doing projects around the house that would impact the look and feel of our home. The big thing at the time was industrial shelves, where you use pipes and shelf brackets with a finished board as the shelf. Friends and family began requesting these items and as word spread we began to make more and started our little business, Chalk It Up. Along with making shelves I also began buying or even grabbing furniture from bulk pick up and giving it new life by restraining and painting them and either selling it or using it to decorate our home. It got to a point where our youngest would wake up from her nap and know to come looking for me first in the garage because that was my “office”!
Once COVID hit, I had a big lull in business and I found I did not enjoy always being dirty and hot in a garage. I used the down time to pivot my business and focus on my true passion, home styling and decorating. Since everyone was sitting at home, that meant that everyone wanted to make changes to their spaces. I made the name change to The Styled Haus, and started advertising my services. I love what I am doing because I can help others with their space by envisioning for them what it could become. Researching and finding the perfect pieces, put them all together visually on a vibe board, including links to purchase, and let them shop that way! Being able to do this gives budgets some flexibility by being able to purchase my suggestions when their budget allows. Also, having the client see how all the things can fit together to make their house a home is so rewarding.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is getting to put my visions on a board for the client to see and then that vision coming to life in their home! Anytime I walk into a new space, I instantly start running ideas through my head for them and what that space could be. Being able to put items together that the client may have never thought of and it all clicking for them is so much fun.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me is good old word of mouth! I have gained many new clients who have gotten my name from former clients, which to me is the best source and complement. Knowing that you did a good job and your work is appreciated and loved.
