We recently connected with Andrea Lavigne and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
Customers are the lifeline of any business. I alway make sure to show up with a small gift, a wall calendar etc for my first appointment with a client to thank them for their time to meet me. I also give a thank you gift when we wrap up a project and make sure to send a Christmas gift at the end of the year. People might not remember what the project was after a while, but they will always remember how you made them feel.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I majored in business in the hospitality industry and one of our mandatory subjects was kitchen design for hotels and restaurants. By the time I finished university, my focus totally shifted from business management to design. Fast forward to 2002 , I started my own design firm in Toronto Canada. Started small with designing built-in cabinets, wall units, closets, kitchens and that lead to clients asking for additional space planning, design and decorating services. I go beyond simply creating aesthetically pleasing spaces—I focus on capturing the essence and personality of each individual or family I work with.
My approach stands out due to my dedication to creating ergonomically functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces. I carefully balance practicality and design to ensure optimal use of space while still maintaining the desired look, feel and decor.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Interior design is not solely about learning how to create visualy pleasing environments. Designers have to learn sales and interpersonal skills in addition to creativity and business management. We have to make sure we speak the client’s language so we can make the entire process a fun experience.
Most people know about the DISC personality test or the Myers/Briggs test where you can learn about the different personality types. I found the BANK CODE by Cheri Tree a lot more valuable because her proven approach teaches not only what the different personality types are, but how to speak with clients in their own language to ensure higher percentage of success. Highly recommend it.
As for Sales training, the most relatable and hands on training is Grant Cardone. Of course we have to learn effective business management, time management, leadership etc.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I make a conscious effort to keep in touch with my previous clients. They are the best source of growing my clientel. Word of mouth is the best advertising for any businesses.
I also focus on layered marketing, Being omnipresent in social media is crutial to brand building.
