We were lucky to catch up with Kindra Keitel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kindra, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My most meaningful projects are always the ones inspired by my family. My mom’s flower gardens almost always find their way into my work. Fishing trips with my dad are there, as are my grandparents’ stories of their camping adventures or my other grandparents’ story of how they courted in a horse and buggy. When I’m drawing on these sources of inspiration, I can’t help but infuse my work with the deepest, most heartfelt, most important parts of who I am.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an artist who creates designs for fabric, stationery, wallpaper, and stand-alone art pieces. I’ve loved to draw for as long as I can remember and have always been encouraged in that pursuit. I started my creative career in photography and, about five years ago, pivoted to illustration. My work most often features botanicals, but I have recently started branching out more, such as including vintage ornaments in my 2023 Christmas fabric collection and designing quilt block stickers. Regardless of the subject matter, my work is always connected to a heart-story, something – be it big or small – that makes me who I am. My greatest hope is that people see themselves in my work too, that they feel loved, seen, and celebrated.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
One of the best ways to support the artistic community is to be vocal about it. Share your favorite artists’ work, comment on their social media posts and videos, tell them how much their work means to you. Buy from independent artists and small businesses as much as you can. Create something yourself and discover first-hand how beautiful the process is. Remember that art, in all its many forms, is not a commodity. It is magic made tangible, infused with bits of the creator’s soul.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission, as I stated previously, is to make people feel loved, seen, and celebrated. To know that they matter.
