We recently connected with Joe Clark and have shared our conversation below.
Joe , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
As a performing singer/songwriter the most important lesson in learning my craft has been real life lessons, hardships and happy moments, unexpected experiences and the emotions that come with normal everyday life. To write an enjoyable yet relatable song, whether it be a happy or sad song it is important that I’ve lived the context in which the song is written.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Joe Clark. I’m a singer/songwriter from a riverbank in Henry county Kentucky. As far back as my memory allows me to recall ive wanted to play music. I started writing poetry and lyrics at around 10 years old and picked up an acoustic guitar at 15, I never turned back. I’ve always written songs based around my own personal experiences in life. I don’t make stories up, I write what I know, what I feel, whether it be the hardships and struggles of an addictive past, growing up in the hills of Kentucky, the happiness and pain of true love & heartbreak, or the darkness of depression/overwhelming joy of everyday real life. I write these songs in hopes somewhere along the way someone who relates to those experiences hears it and can generate an emotional connection to the music. I don’t pretend to be who I am not, I am Joe Clark and I intend to portray my music as completely and genuinely 100% me. I want folks to hear my music and feel a deep connection to a moment or memory in their own personal life. I don’t write my songs only for me, they are meant to be taken in and ingested by the listener in a way that fits them and their journey through life, interpreted however they feel necessary to fit them. I just want to make people feel something with what I have to say. That’s the ultimate goal, to make a positive difference in people’s life in the best way I know how. I can spend my whole life writing songs in the woods but if no one is around to listen to them they don’t serve their purpose. My music is meant to be heard, and that’s all I want is for people to hear it, until they feel it.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The mission driving my creative journey is to be heard. To leave behind a story for my growing children, I don’t have wealth, all I have to leave them when I leave this world is my words and I want them to know who their daddy was by the honesty he wrote in his songs. The mission is to connect, to carve a path of deep connection within folks who relate to the lyrics of my songs, to tell my story through song in a way that anyone can feel it. To shed light on darkness’s we all face, and hide inside us, through song. To create joy and happiness, through words of inspiration. To leave behind a story of my life that screams confidence and power, yet humility and honesty. The mission is simply to connect on a personal level with music in a way that makes people want to hear more.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is hearing the sincerity in people’s voice after a show, explaining that the songs touched them in some way. Making an emotional unforgettable connection, sharing tears of happiness and sadness with complete strangers by singing the words I wrote, about the things I feel. It is so rewarding to me to be able to use music and writing as a therapy to heal myself from past trauma, and knowing that it is being created to spread and help heal others in their own journey.
