We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gabrielle Vinson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gabrielle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Doing hair was always a hobby of mine. Going back to the time I was a kid. I never in a million years did I think I could be making a very good living from doing what I love. There’s ups and downs with any “job” but I’m really living in my purpose and helping others along the way.

Gabrielle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a master hair stylist. That means I have multiple certifications within the industry. I have clients of all ethnicities. From basic haircuts to extravagant wedding styles, my portfolio is extensive. Over the last 5-6 years I have grown my reach through social media. But nothing compares to word of mouth advertising. I was hesitant to share my work on social media, fearing judgement. But I said to myself “God gave you this talent, and he makes no mistakes!” And here we are 6 later!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
On my journey, I seek to let people see the beauty and greatness within themselves. I’m fixing thier hair and they feel beautiful! With my coaching and encouragement, my stylist reach thier full potential! And that makes me feel so accomplished. Our journey is never about us, it’s about helping others. God put us here to help one another.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I don’t think people struggle to understand hairstylists. I think people struggle to see people who are servicing them as people.
But beyond that small hiccup, I want hairstylist, new and experienced to know that no one can ever tell you your worth. That is determined by you!
