We recently connected with Monroe Banuelos and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Monroe, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I most definitely wish I would have started my creative career sooner. Having all of those restraints made it harder for me to find my true creative expression, I felt lost and it sucked because I knew my potential. Now that I have given myself more freedom to embark on all of my creative interests, it all just comes naturally now. Which in my opinion is the greatest blessing of having a creative career, the healing that comes with it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, my name is Monroe Banuelos. I’m a queer/trans artist, digital creator, and model. I was born a female and transitioned into a male, moved across the country by myself, and started pursuing my dreams and my truth all at the age of 19 years old. I am now 23 years old, I have a family, and I’m living my life…which is essentially my dream. I grew up unable to fully express my creativity outside of in my lil room or in my head, so now I’ve been expressing myself in cool different ways. I love fashion so I collect clothes and customize them or I paint stuff on the clothes I find. My friends wear them, I wear them, I love it!! I have a website with them on there hahah it’s my name, dot com. It’s kinda cool because I get to film content about the clothes I paint or customize which is also something I love to do. Feels refreshing to know that all of my interests and hobbies kinda spill into each other. I think the best part about my craft and my “business” is the fact that it’s something I enjoy doing, and it also influences other people to do the same thing.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist is the fact that i’m free to express myself, i’m free to be weird and free, i’m free to channel the crazy shit that goes on in my mind. I think it’s most rewarding when people wear it.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I think one of the main things I had to unlearn when walking this path is unlearning the conventional path. I’m not like everyone else, I’m not meant to do it like everyone else. Unlearning the status quo was difficult because it was pushed down my throat growing up. I did it though, it was definitely worth it.
