Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Randall. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jessica, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think the measurements of success vary greatly. Speaking specifically about success as a business owner there are a few things that I use to measure success. Of course the financial aspect, but more importantly was I able to impact those that work for me in a positive way. Sometimes I will never know and other times kids that have worked for me come back and tell me all they learned, and what an impact working for Pink Mamas has made on their lives. sometimes success is just making it through the day or season.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Pink Mamas started as an ice cream truck business. That industry is not really regulated and I never felt comfortable sending my son to the ice cream truck so I started my own. From there it has grown into this beast that I never would’ve thought possible. I am a risk taker by nature, and I would rather lose it all then look back and think I missed it or have regrets that I didn’t take the chance. I believe what sets us apart is the feeling you get when a pink-mamas ice cream truck comes to your event or you come to one of our ice cream shops and it’s an experience. We make some of our ice cream and we are known for our Homemade Pink Waffle cones! I believe we have a niche and we stick to that as far as where we put additional locations.
I’m most proud of the fact that we’ve been able to keep this going through everything that’s happened. It’s getting harder and harder, but I try to stay as positive as possible and in general I always feel optimistic.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
When we started in the trucks, a local newspaper that cater to kids found out about us and invited us to their expo. From then on things just took off as we are very unique in our presentation and customer service. I think staying true to who I am as a person, my moral compass, my dedication to working hard has made a huge impact. Once we opened our first brick and mortar things have just seem to grow from there and I’m humbled and grateful every day for the opportunities that have been presented to us.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think one of the biggest areas all business owners or managers are pivoting with these days is relating to and managing employees. The wants and demands are constantly changing. It’s not the same as when I was raised where you just go to work and do your job. now there are so many more layers to effective management and employee retention. I will say I think that is the most difficult part of being a business owner.
