Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adam Lacour. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Adam, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
The biggest risk I’ve taken was choosing to invest in my current band, ALENIA.
Adam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Adam Lacour. I am 34 years old and I’ve chosen to become a musican when I was only 14 years old when I picked up my first guitar. I started off joining a local band when I was 22 years old. A friend of mine said he knew a band looking for a guitarist, and I jumped at the opportuinity immediately. The band did not last longer than about 2 years, but I didn’t give up and waited for the next thing in store for me musically. Fast forward to 2019, and I met Angel Lunetta at a Slipknot cover band show. She had a band idea in mind and I agreed to join up with her on it. That band is ALENIA. Throughout my time of playing and learning, I’ve always had everyone tell me that I can’t make a career out of music and that I’m wasting my life away. But you only live once, and I’ve always chosen to shoot for the stars with music. Everyone from family, to friends, and associates all were trying to always put me down, saying that I can’t achieve the goal of success from music. I am completely self taught in terms of skill on my instrument and I’ve never chosen to believe that and knock myself down to a normal life with a normal job. To not go after your dreams is to lock up your mind and gatekeep yourself to a life society has conditioned themself to believe is the only way to live and be successful. I’m very proud of this band I’m currently in. We have done so much in such little time and conquered every obstacle that has been thrown our way so far.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal/mission in my creative journey is not just to be successful. But to be a symbol/inspiration for others. I’m a person of color, and there are not many of us in the music industry at all. I don’t just want my music to be enjoyed and heartfelt by everyone, but I want my music to belong deeper than in the music industry alone. I’ve always been a cinematic person. I envision my music to be and feel cinematic and dramatic. For it to be in motion pictures, movies, and video games. I have always enjoyed movies growing up with my family and appreciated the music in them. I’ve played video games since I was a child, and also wanted my music in them. One day, I said to myself that I want my music in movies. I want my music in video games and I’m going to make that happen. I want it to have more of a place to where you make mental pictures or scenes with it. Score music and motion picture soundtracks have always had a big place in my heart for relating the music to any movie, show, or video game that I have ever watched or played.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Come out to local shows again. There is so much raw and unspoken potential out here in Chicago, Illinois. The smallest unheard band/artist can be the next big thing everywhere you go. Those artists deserve the chance to be heard. To be able to present themselves and give you an experience to remember. Some of the best shows I have ever been to, have been local shows. The artists give it their all and really blow you away with their performance. Things like the internet, spotify, pandora, and others have made it so much harder for you to not only hear these artists, but even to give them a chance. Getting your music on these platforms is so easy, and everyone knows it. They pay the artists almost nothing compared to you buying the artists music and supporting them directly. To best support local artists, you should go to their shows. Buy any merchandise they have. Tell your friends about them. Give them a place in your heart next to your favorite existing bands.
