Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gene Blalock. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Gene thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
That’s a profound question, and it’s one I often find myself contemplating. When it comes to the most meaningful project, it’s a challenging task as each has held a distinct significance for me. It may sound a bit trite, but each project holds a unique place for me, be it positive or negative, and there is meaning in that.
I’ve had the opportunity to work on numerous documentary films that have made a substantial impact, driving positive change. These endeavors unquestionably carry a profound sense of meaning. Even in the realm of fictional storytelling, there is hopefully meaning in the narratives we create.
Film, regardless of genre, should leave a lasting impression on the audience. It should stimulate their thoughts, stir their emotions, and encourage reflection upon their own lives. As storytellers, we function as temporary custodians of the stories we tell, bearing a responsibility to create a legacy that outlives us. That is where true meaning lies.
Many of my films have “outcast” and misunderstood characters as the heart of the story who serve as the emotional core of the narrative. I hope to find meaning in following these characters through their struggles. They represent the voices often unheard in society, shedding light on the challenges faced by those who are frequently overlooked. It is within their journeys that we discover a reflection of the broader human experience. By affording these characters a platform, we find the richness and diversity of human existence, finding profound meaning in the process.
During my formative years, I was told that creativity was a pursuit reserved for weekends, not a viable profession. The pursuits of structure and financial security held meaning for many, but they never resonated with me. My sense of meaning has always been deeply rooted in the world of creativity, and that’s where I’ve chosen to invest my passion and purpose.
What I can say is that every project I’ve undertaken has had an impact on me, and I hope that they, in turn, touch the hearts of those who experience them. That, to me, is the essence of meaning – leaving behind art that resonates with kindness, compassion, and a deeper understanding of the human condition.
That’s probably a bit of a meandering stream of consciousness, but hopefully, it answered your question.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey into the world of filmmaking has been quite an unexpected adventure. I’ve always loved film which led me to film school. But, life had other plans for me when my musical career became center stage.
Los Angeles became my home, and music was my focus for several years. However, after a particularly grueling tour, I realized it was time to take a step back, recharge, and explore my other creative interests… painting, writing, photography and, of course, filmmaking.
The intention was to create a few short films and return to my musical endeavors. Little did I know that my love for filmmaking would pull me in and never let go. My collaboration with my friend and business partner, Phil, led to the birth of Seraph Films, a small independent film company.
Seraph is a tight-knit team of passionate filmmakers who thrive on bringing ideas to the screen. We assist with everything from script development and preproduction to the intricate details of post-production, including editing, coloring, and DCP preparation.
Hopefully what sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to the art of storytelling. We’re not just a production company; we are a team of artists who love the craft of making films.
I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve accomplished at Seraph Films, and our ability to provide a platform for emerging talent in the industry.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
This industry, it’s a tempestuous sea, where one must not only weather the storms but also find beauty in the chaos. Resilience is crucial for filmmakers.
My first feature was one of the most stressful experiences of my life – high expectations and intense pressure – balancing creativity and producer demands. There were conflicts between the creative team and the people funding the project. I learned that resilience means understanding the importance of impermanence and finding a way to approach each situation with kindness, which is certainly not easy in heated situations. It’s easy to forget that everyone involved is human and striving for the same goal to create something beautiful that connects with people. Resilience was not just about enduring hardships, but also about recognizing the humanity in everyone on the project.
To me, resilience in filmmaking is not merely a survival tactic; it’s an artistic and personal transformation, a beautiful tapestry woven from the threads of persistence, patience, and compassion. It’s the soul of the filmmaker, and it’s what makes our stories resonate with audiences.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I don’t think of it that way… if you place a particular mission or goal on a journey, you might miss out on other beautiful experiences.
Creativity is like a grand adventure where we get to explore, experiment, and grow. By keeping an open mind and allowing that expression to evolve naturally, I’ve found that I stumble upon unexpected moments that I wouldn’t have discovered if I’d been too focused on a specific mission.
Ultimately, the goal is to love what you do and leave a legacy that mirrors a life well-lived. It’s about leaving the world a little better than you found it, creating experiences that resonate with people, and inspiring others to pursue their passions. I have a profound desire to make the most of this beautiful disaster we call life and share the experiences and wisdom it brings.
