We were lucky to catch up with Chenrui Zhang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chenrui, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have been fortunate to be deeply involved in all the projects I’ve been a part of, particularly in commercial marketing and content creation.
In my role as Creative Director for KIA Motors (USA), I had the privilege of contributing to a commercial with a distinctive creative approach. The commercial transported viewers back to the Old West, featuring a cowboy authentically dressed in period attire. This cowboy, in a state of panic, sought his horse in a contemporary KIA dealership. The creative twist was the transformation of the horse into the latest KIA Stinger sports coupe, emphasizing the fusion of rugged cowboy imagery with the luxury of our vehicles. This unique storytelling aimed to effectively localize the brand image in the southern United States I took great pride in shaping and refining the creative vision behind this innovative campaign.
Similarly, during my collaboration with the Georgia Aquarium, I served as director and producer in the creation of the “Life Below the Surface” podcast series and accompanying videos. Prior to production, my team and I conducted thorough research on all the guests and planned the rundown for seamless execution. Our dedication to perfection even extended to the smallest details, as we went so far as to remove our shoes during recording to eliminate any potential background noise. The narrative structure, featuring a host and multiple experts discussing marine life topics, was a concept we developed, allowing for efficient information sharing. We also employed a dual-camera setup for video production, capturing close-ups of guests’ facial expressions and providing an overall view of the recording environment. This setup, combined with filming in the ocean ballroom with stunning underwater views, aimed to create an immersive experience for the audience. I still remember how excited I was when the first episode of the series garnered over 1,400 unique listeners in a fairly short time.
In one memorable moment, I captured the aquarium’s President and CEO, Dr. Brian Davis, discussing his connection to the aquarium while a giant whale shark swam by, symbolizing the profound link between humans and marine animals. This close-up shot emphasized the emotional connection, making our podcast unique compared to traditional science and education programs.
These specific creative details have been pivotal in making my work stand out and resonate with the audience, contributing to the success of these projects and ultimately enabling me to earn a good living from my creative work.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I find myself fortunate to be a professional in the creative and media industry, deeply passionate about the art of storytelling and filmmaking. My path began in my youth, in a city celebrated for its vibrant cultural and entertainment scene. Throughout the years, I have worked on a variety of projects with distinct reputation, including directing and producing features, documentaries, TV series, commercials, and music videos.
My career trajectory took a significant upturn with my tenure at Hunan TV, a highly respected television station in China, where I held the role of a television program director. This position was a cornerstone in my professional development, offering me a profound understanding of the media industry. I was entrusted with the responsibility of contributing to high-rated programs and efficiently managing considerable budgets. The episodes I was involved in not only achieved remarkable success but also garnered the highest ratings compared to similar TV programs, marking a notable accomplishment in my career.
Driven by my pursuit of excellence, I ventured to the United States, where I pursued an MFA degree and explored innovative approaches to visual storytelling. Among my proudest achievements is an Emmy Award for the music video ‘Hallelujah’, which pushed the boundaries of traditional rap music videos. I was also honored with The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) nomination for a TV commercial I produced for Perrier-Jouet Champagne and received an Emmy nomination for Best Director in the documentary genre in another year.
Currently, I serve as a Creative Director in the Atlanta area, expanding our video production business and securing high-profile contracts to assist advertising and media agencies in boosting client sales. Additionally, I oversee the production of podcast shows that have garnered remarkable download and play records.
My journey has been marked by challenges, especially during the pandemic, where I refused to compromise on quality and leaned on professional equipment and personal connections to complete complex projects. I’ve also embraced cultural diversity, drawing from various influences to enrich my work.
What sets me apart, I believe, is my unwavering commitment to excellence, my openness to explore new ideas, and my ability to lead teams in delivering top-quality work. I have worked across various media forms, from commercials and TV shows to podcasts and documentaries, always aiming to create captivating content that enhances the brands it represents.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
To truly support our artists and creatives, we must begin by nurturing talent from a young age through arts education. Grants and funding opportunities provide the necessary resources, while affordable workspaces and housing create spaces for artistic growth. Cultural districts promote inclusivity, and copyright protections ensure artists receive recognition. Public art initiatives and art organizations empower artists, and cultural exchanges foster collaboration. Public engagement, particularly in museums and galleries, encourages appreciation for the arts. Recognizing and addressing artists’ mental health challenges is crucial. Ultimately, it’s about raising awareness of the value of art and advocating for supportive policies to maintain a thriving creative ecosystem.
