We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kerry Hill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kerry, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish I had started it sooner. I’ve always loved art and creating, but felt for a long time that it wasn’t a viable way to make money. I simply didn’t have the confidence that I was talented or skilled enough for people to pay me to do something that I would do on my own for the enjoyment.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always been an artist – long before I felt comfortable calling myself one. I spent my childhood taking art and dance classes, and in college, I discovered that I could sing and act a little, and spent some time doing that. I loved all of it!!
Adulthood moved me away from those activities – they’re fun, but frivolous, I thought. It wasn’t until my 30’s that I decided to return to my childhood interest, and once I dipped my toe back in to that art pond, the love for it came flooding back! I had an Etsy Shop for several years where I sold hand painted gifts, and custom design note cards and invitations. I’ve also painted wall murals, custom corn hole boards, dabbled in interior decorating, and upcycled furniture.
As artists tend to do, though, I’m always looking for new creative ideas and outlets. I’ve watched baking shows and followed cake artists online for years, always thinking to myself, “I bet I could do that.” So, April of 2021, I decided to make my first ever cake to take to a family get together. It didn’t go exactly as planned, decoration wise, but it still got good reviews, So, I went home and began to practice. Any birthday, holiday or excuse I could find, here comes a cake! Then I absolutely fell in love with the amazing cupcake flowers I was seeing online. Oh, Wow, I thought. I want to make these! So I did, over and over again. Thus, Kerry Cakes was born.
I’ve now spent over two years providing hundreds of cake and cupcake orders to people in the Upstate SC area.
I’ve helped my customers celebrate their birthdays, graduations, baby showers, bridal showers, weddings and holidays!
It’s an honor to be invited into these special moments of their lives, and I strive to always give them a product that adds fun, enjoyment and maybe even some Wow to their events. I hope my customers come back again and again because they trust my artistic vision and are confident in my work. After all, it’s my name on the box.!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Bringing smiles and joy to other people by simply doing what makes me happy and what comes naturally. There’s no better way to feel plugged in as a human being!

How did you build your audience on social media?
As a small, home based business, I’ve not had the budget to spend a lot on advertising or marketing. When you wear every hat in your business, it’s nearly impossible to keep up with the ever changing social media platforms and algorithms. I’ve relied on word of mouth from friends, family and happy, satisfied customers to help share my work and grow my followers. That’s worked for me so far.
