Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chantel Hardison . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chantel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
For me learning the art of makeup is a lesson that will never be really complete. Due to changing trends and product innovation the makeup world is constantly evolving. This is a large reason why this medium keeps me inspired and engaged as an artist. I attended beauty school early in my career and thought that I was going to be ready to tackle everything once I graduated but that definitely wasn’t the case. I realized pretty quickly that I still had a lot to learn, especially if I wanted to explore different aspects of the industry. I was determined to become skilled in all styles of makeup (and there are A LOT) each with different techniques, products and nuances. School had provided me the knowledge of color theory, skin type, eye shape and face shape. However, I discovered there are many other factors to consider – such as lighting, texture, product performance and even external elements (weather etc) which I had to learn how to navigate.
Another valuable skill harnessed through experience is the ability to communicate with the client and adjust when necessary. It’s impossible to predict every scenario that may present itself to you, that’s part of the allure of art, being able to think on your feet can control how you remedy challenging situations.
Complacency is the biggest obstacle that has stood in my way of evolving as an artist. It is very easy to fall into comfortable habits. When you are an independent creative, you have to pull yourself out of that box to keep things moving in a fresh direction.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Of course! My name is Chantel Hardison I am a professional makeup artist in Phoenix and my company is called Artistic Beauty Collective. It is a mobile makeup studio that specializes in multimedia artistry. Multimedia artistry encompasses all styles of makeup. I offer services in Beauty, Bridal, Fashion, Boudoir, Avant Garde, Photography, TV, Film, Stage, Transformation and even Body Painting. Within these categories, I specialize in all different skin types, tones and textures.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I find personal fulfillment being able to offer such a wide array of specialties to my clients. Each client is a creative challenge and an opportunity to connect with someone new. I love being able to draw inspiration from different resources and innovate to bring a collaborative vision to life. Every day for me is different! For example last week I went from working in a studio on a documentary, the next day I was hired for a Bat Mitzvah and the following day for a fashion photo shoot. My favorite thing is being able to reflect back on photos of my work, allowing me to relive the artistic moments that I love so much.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to remain relevant as an artist and continue to evolve and advance with the industry. My mission is to continue to push myself artistically and expand my horizons in multimedia artistry. I hope to help grow a community of artists in my area that work together and create great things.
