We recently connected with Moonk Foonk and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Moonk, thanks for joining us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
As an artist, if I knew what I knew back then, I would have been creating content, a YouTube channel, making products, selling stickers, and everything you can imagine an artist could do. I would have done what I did now and started small. Years ago, when I realized I didn’t want to be a Nurse Anesthetist anymore, I felt a little lost in the art world. There wasn’t TikTok or Instagram Reels, but there was Youtube. Also, looking for art stores instead of craft stores would be something I would do.
Moonk, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Moonk Foonk, and I’m a multidisciplinary artist. Being a multidisciplinary artist means I don’t stick to one genre of art. I can illustrate, draw, paint, design shoes and clothes, paint murals, make sculptures, create with clay, make woodblock prints, create digital work, and animate. You name it, I can do it.
I started creating as a young kid, but I didn’t voice my dream of being an Artist until I was a young adult.
I create custom pieces and commissions for my clients. Whom I refer to as the Foonkie Gang. I create custom Grad Caps as well. I turn my art into stickers, prints, buttons, clothes, and more.
I would think that my main theme of art would set me apart. I focus on Greek Mythology most of the time. I just tell it from my perspective, the Black woman’s perspective.
I am most proud of everything I’ve accomplished this year. I have been doing art shows since January. I was accepted into the Black Girl Art Show. I am also a Brand Ambassador for the Black Girl Art Show. I was accepted into the Pinterest x Cam Kirk Studios Creator Residency. I was also accepted into my Alumni Art Show.
I love being an Artist, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m still building my audience on social media. What I found works for me is posting more. I post the work that I am proud of. I make relatable content. I use hashtags that go with the post and my business. I created a few personal hashtags so that it’s easier to find my content. I engage with everyone that comes to my page. I don’t just like the comments. I respond to them. I listen to the Foonkie Gang. I don’t like to call them followers, so I call them the Foonkie Gang. I also built my social media by following a few trends. Some people say don’t use the trends, but sometimes it’s worked for me. Whatever is meant for you, will be for you. Don’t just do something to do it.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I tell anyone who asks the same thing. Most people think I make everything still, which is understandable. I believe you should always work smarter and not harder. I have two go-to sticker manufacturers, and they are StickerApp and Sticker Mule. Sticker Mules run deals all of the time. StickerApp gives you tips and tricks on their Instagram. Sticker Mule also has other products that are of good quality, not just stickers. They have keychains, coasters, floor decals, and shirts. I also use CatPrint to print my art prints. There’s also a place called iprintfromhome.com. One of my friends from college told me to do the second one. I also use Moo for my business cards. I love the quality of their business cards. I have a discount code for 25% off Moo and a referral code for Sticker Mule if you’re interested.
