We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jonathan Ortiz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jonathan below.
Jonathan, appreciate you joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am happy to be an artist, i love the freedom to be able to freely express myself and not have the feeling of being limited by “remaining” under someone’s idea of what work is.
I’ve actually worked at a “normal” job before, and yea, it’s not for me haha.
Jonathan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a professional Bboy/entertainer/educator.
I was introduced into breaking (bboying) at the age of 12. I was attending a cousins sweet 16 and in the midst of the party a circle opened and a bunch of dancers started doing incredible movements, and it inspired me to want to dance just like them. I’ve been doing it ever since, and now I’m one of Florida’s best!
I got into entertainment in 2012, mainly bboying, stunts, acrobatics, a bit of acting, and emceeing shows. This was all due to my love for dancing, my passion to dance open these doors to the entertainment world.
Being an educator, i professionally teach the arts of bboying and other small factors of hiphop at a local private school in the state of Florida. This is my first year so far as an educator, and it’s been a great experience! I’m happy to see where my passion for bboying has lead me.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to have my style of dance to be timeless, to where I’m relevant no matter how many years pass by. Also to teach the youth my love for bboying, and see where they take it and watch how they begin to inspire others.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One of the books that helped me out a bit was called “let’s get off our buts”. It’s a book about how to avoid making excuses to not do something. We tend to abuse the word “but” when we don’t want to do something.
“I want to run a mile in the morning, BUT I’m too tired”.
I learned to identify when I’m making excuses to help me become just a bit more focused on goals and practice my will to do something despite how tired i am or when I’m feeling lazy.
