We recently connected with Crystal Jordan and have shared our conversation below.
Crystal, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I was inspired to start my business by my son, who was diagnosed with autism. He became the inspiration for my brand and writing children’s books. My hope is to make a positive impact on others and embrace Autism.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Crystal Jordan. Originally from Atlanta, Ga, I attended Bauder College to study apparel design. By writing books, I educate people in my community and around the world about ASD. My son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2. As a black woman, I am so open about Zachariah and my story simply because the black community rarely discusses special needs issues. To help others who are embarrassed or afraid to talk about their lives, I am sharing a piece of mine. I plan to keep being a voice for Autism awareness. I created a brand centered around my son’s disorder called, “Zachariah’s World,” where children with ASD are not forgotten but embraced.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I unlearned is that not all kids are bad or act out. They might be experiencing sensory overload. The bright lights, the noise, and a change in routine could all be contributing factors. Therefore, having a child with an autism spectrum disorder has taught me to see the world differently, without making judgments.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Zachariah World is 100% funded by my savings and my own money. I have not taken out a loan to fund it. I will eventually apply for grants so I can add more resources to my brand.
