We were lucky to catch up with Kourtney Coleman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kourtney , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Kreations by Ko is catchy but also simplistic and describes my business to a T! My nickname from childhood as is KoKo so that is where the Ko comes from. My “Kreations” are the items that I make for my customers. I make logos, flyers, t shirts, baby bundles, skirt sets, and much more. A lot of my customers give me free reign with minimal guidelines and give me the freedom to be as “kreative” as I choose. The name just fit !
Kourtney , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always been a creative/artsy type of person. My birth father was very talented at drawing and painting. I shared his passion for creating but was not as good at it. When the pandemic struck, my uncle asked me to tap into that creativity to make flyers for his travel agency business and things took off from there. After posting the flyers made for him, an old college classmate asked me to try my hand at creating a logo for a small business she was starting. From there I never looked back. I started with marketing items like logos, flyers, labels, business cards and thank you notes. I wanted to get into T shirts but wanted to start small because I was working with a limited budget and had no clue where to start. I bought a Cricut and a Cricut Mini press and decided to start with baby onesies. They were more successful than I could have imagined. As I learned, I expanded. Today I make custom shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, jerseys, baby bundles, baby crates, wine glasses, scan to pay signs, skirt sets, graduation stoles, sashes, keychains, paint and sip kits, and more.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think my customer service has always been the thing that helps me to retain customers for multiple jobs and brings me new ones. I am self taught with all that I do and though I know that I am good, I now there is always room to be better and much more for me to learn. Because of that I have always tried to make sure my customers feel like a person and not just another order. I am honest about turn around time on orders, I try my best to communicate about orders as frequently as possible. and deliver quality products. Whenever I feel like I have let. a customer down in some way, I always try to make up for or it either with a complimentary item, reduction in price on next service or something beneficial to them. All of my orders come with a custom Thank you note (even the digital orders) to express my gratitude that of all the people they could have done business with they chose me.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Social Media has been my biggest source of new clients. When people are on Facebook or Instagram looking for recommendations for graphics or customized gifts there are numerous people who tag me with the nicest words to say about my products and their experience with me. More often than not those recommendations lead to orders. Creating reels on TikTok and other social media sites has brought me several customers as well. Social media is a beautiful thing if used properly.
