We recently connected with Jessica Hunter and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Risks are an everyday issue within any business. You have cyberattacks, hacks, people commenting their thoughts, which people are entitled too, you just have to be prepared to know how to respond. Waking up as an epileptic patient is a risk itself. Traveling to and from not knowing when you’re going to seize and who can properly handle that. Not only that, it’s a risk of loosing business. It happens, where customers can’t always fathom those things, and sometimes can loose attraction, which I’ve always been an inspiration to others for the fact that I keep pushing irregardless. I do it, because it’s who I am as a SmrtGrl, and an individual. I do it because my story has changed someone else’s. Will you be next?
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Greetings, and thank you for having me. My name is Jessica Hunter, and I am a 27 year old blogger, and so much more. I say so much more because, my life is like Gold, I have my hand in every pot. I started a brand named Literaturebyjessc, but I had no idea it would get to where it did. It was a copping mechanism for me, and then I figured, someone else probably needs to hear this. Originally, Literaturebyjessc was just a poet and short story writer. It was a form of my expression, things I didn’t know how to talk about sounded better when the names where switched around, and it wasn’t me going through the situation. My fans and those close to me knew what I was doing, enjoyed my poetry, and even took me to perform in front of American Poet Maria Mazziotti Gillan, who loved my poetry! Sometimes friends are family as well, or more like family, and my one friend always said “Sis, go further, do what it is that you want to do. I see the potential in you.” Years later, I am here with a website, blogs, poetry, writing, merchandise, and traveling to explore more businesses in my community. I recently joined a youth club at 27 years old, named the SmrtGrlzClub. They say support other businesses, and this business stands for a lot of the things I stand for, like women empowerment, daily affirmations and inspirations, and just keeping the youth involved in a good way. I think when you see more people doing the same things you want for the community, it builds a more positive standpoint on that community, and a bit more knowledge of where we came from, to where we are going.
I’ve worked with legends in the music industry, watching people make and promote the sound of “Jersey Club,” that I like, so much so that I wanted to learn for myself. I didn’t want to fit in, I wanted to go deeper than where I came from. I was given all neccessities, showed the basics, and I was happy with the 30 second zip I made. Not because “I’m doing it,” but because i’m doing it with, and for the people I love.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience is the process of recovering from a downfall so fast, or promptly. I’d say having Epilepsy in general. The medication I take is hard to operate off of, it’s hard to move around, but the fact that people understand because I have branded that into my business keeps me going. There were times when I would seize, and wouldn’t have the courage to continuously keep pushing, but I knew there were people who depended on me, and my stories to keep them going forward themselves. I didn’t want anyone to doubt my ability, so I became a teacher, attended college, and went further than just my business. I visited people with the same condition as me, to discuss what we can do for each other. Sometimes dealing with that alone is very hard, you don’t really know many people who want to care for someone under that condition. These are things that put me to a stop in my walk, and then I got this power to run, fast. After seizing twenty-seven times back to back, the facial expression on the doctor’s face clearly read, “How did you do it?”.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience via personal experience. I would attend events, and social network, and then meet those in person, that I had networked with. These were people of whom I went from listening to their music on the radio to working, and blogging for them. Networking is a great experience, and an opportunity to move forward for everyone, because now I’m telling your story, and you’re sharing your experience about me, with others who are now inspired and want to hear more. I started attending events and supporting the youth, and charities, times where I’d just go and pay for a few items with the person behind me not knowing their order was taken care of. That brings me joy, those pictures we take in that moment brings me joy knowing I made someone else happy, and then the best part comes. “When’s your next appearance?” or “How do I contact you?” Next thing you know, my audience has expanded via word of mouth, and social media as things are shared around. I’m proud to tell anyone, yes they can google me.
