We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tamera Hill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tamera, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The biggest risk is not taking any risks in life. Since I can remember, I’ve always been the type to play it safe. Starting out, my goal was to finish college and climb the corporate ladder all the way to the top. From a child, I knew I wouldn’t have an ordinary life. It was always something calling me in the distance to greatness. I thought it was in the corporate world, then I thought it was in the “church world.” Little did I know, it was neither, but those very same experiences in corporate and the church world would help me get to where I was going. While working for the City of San Diego, on my to the top, mind you…I began to have a desire to write and tell stories that I thought needed to be told. The desire transformed into a deep yearning. I found myself no longer satisfied with the day to day 9 to 5. I watched the clock every day, and when the clock struck five, I’d rush to my desktop to write. It felt like being reacquainted with a first love. Now that I think about it, it was just that. As a kid, I enjoyed making up stories and writing about it, playing make believe in my room all by myself. The joy I felt while doing it feels the same even today when I sit down at my desk to create. Needless to say, this went on for many years until I decided to take a risk one day. One day I decided that my script would become a play. I took $11,000.00 from my savings and went to the Lyceum theater and put down a deposit to reserve the theater for a week. After that huge step, I had no choice but to hire a band, cast, and crew. I was in too deep now. I had no clue how to do any of this, but I knew it was in me to do it. This was my calling… again that distant voice was calling me to greater. Later I’d discover it was my purpose here in this life.
Tamera, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Recently the Tamera Hill Production brand has partnered with Hidden Gem Entertainment TV, a streaming network, to bring more relevant content to the world. We are excited to bring all types of content like movies, plays, documentaries, television shows, special live events and reality television. We need more platforms that highlight untapped talent. Talent that would never be discovered because of gatekeepers, and other obstacles in the entertainment industry. That is why the network is called Hidden Gem. We find hidden gems and introduce them to the world. We are excited to present our first live Hidden Gem Original, Workplace Drama, streaming on November 17, 2023.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is bringing people joy, encouragement, courage, and a resolution to a problem through something I have written and brought to them by way of a song, movie, or a play. The reward is when I receive an email, a DM, or someone walks up to me and tells me how much the film blessed or changed their lives. I love giving talented people chances to shine. I love finding hidden gems, and watching them soar on stage or in front of a camera.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The business in the entertainment industry can be very challenging. I’ve learned that relationship is one thing, but business is another. I had to learn this the hard way. Just because you like someone and feel a sense of trust, doesn’t mean you can forego contracts when doing a business deal. Always, always handle the business first. It helps keep the relationship intact.
