We were lucky to catch up with Cassandra Bohne-L. recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cassandra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I have never been happier in my life! I actually had a regular job for quite some time before dedicating myself to my art. I graduated from college with a degree in Finance and immediately went into the corporate world. I worked in the energy industry primarily in compliance and accounting so I definitely know what a regular day to day job feels like. I enjoyed working in the corporate world but it’s nothing like working for yourself, especially when you are doing something you are passionate about! I absolutely LOVE being an artist and focusing my efforts on my art 100%. I am very blessed to be able to do what I do and I wouldn’t have it any other way!!!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Painting was always a hobby for me, a therapeutic outlet when I was in college and working in the energy industry. The walls of my home are covered with colorful landscapes and other images that I painted over the years. But a simple painting of a single blue butterfly changed my life. A vivid blue butterfly that I painted on a lemon-yellow background, titled “Freedom” immediately inspired me and still inspires me today! It was this painting that triggered my fascination with butterflies. It was this painting that inspired me to work with real butterflies and somehow incorporate them into my art, So I embarked on a path of research and discovery and eventually learned the art of preserving butterflies.
After a couple of years of working with butterflies I introduced my line of butterfly clocks and that is essentially where my art “career” began. My butterfly clocks were a huge success when I first introduced them and they have become bold statement pieces that have transformed modern home décor and design. I try to use exotic, beautiful butterflies from all over the world in all of my pieces. My goal is to bring the butterflies to life in a way never done before.
I name and sign each of my clocks and they each come with a Certificate of Authenticity, detailing the species I chose. My clocks are sold directly at bluebutterflydesigns.net and can be found in high-end retailers, art galleries throughout Houston, and at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The clocks range in size from 21”x21” to 34”x34” and retail from $2000 -$8,000. I also have patent-pending on my clocks so no one else can make them.
Even though my unique butterfly clocks are what catapulted my art career, I still have a passion for painting and designing one of a kind butterfly cloches, which are also sold at galleries and at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. I am very proud of where I am and humbled to have contributed something so extraordinarily different to the world of art. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported me and believed in me and my work.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Hands down, the most rewarding aspect is seeing how my art impacts people. Because butterflies have so much meaning and significance to people my art has impacted lives in so many ways. My art has invoked so much joy and emotion, true heartfelt love. My art has stirred people’s souls and I have had the privilege of witnessing it! It is a truly incredible and rewarding feeling to know that my art can captivate people the way it does.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My butterfly clocks and cloches capture the timeless beauty of real butterflies, in their natural, unadulterated state. In a world where human activity and global warming and climate change threaten many butterfly species, I hope my clocks can preserve a record of this wonder of nature for future generations. By ensuring that I use only sustainably sourced butterflies I can also make my own small contribution to the survival of these species. I strive to preserve the beauty of this delicate species and, in a sense, resurrect it through my art. My goal is to invoke a sense of life, resurrection and timelessness to all those who experience my art.
