We were lucky to catch up with Colter Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Colter, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
As a boat captain in Southern California, I see a ton of beautiful scenery on a daily basis. The lion’s share of my inspiration in documentary filmmaking comes from what I see and experience in the ocean every day. In my view, to be a successful storyteller, you need to immerse yourself in experiences that charge you with creative energy. My goal is always to take my audience to places that they never knew existed. Whether that’s a remote island in the South Pacific, or some windswept cove on California’s rugged central coast, I constantly challenge myself to keep exploring.
Colter, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up on the beach in California, I’ve been around boats and the Ocean my entire life. Picking up a camera to record my experiences was only natural. I see film, writing, and still photography as the best ways to communicate the incredible marine environments that surround me on a daily basis.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice
I’m no expert but that said, I think they’re a scam lol. I like to hold art in my hands. For me a nice huge physical print of a great photograph is where it’s at.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I’ve come to learn that sometimes the little details are the most interesting part of a story. Artists can get so focused on big picture vision that they sometimes forget that people really connect with subtle details and that’s what really defines authenticity.
