Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sybil Sloan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sybil , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you’re open to it, can you talk to us about the best (or worst) investment you’ve made. What’s the backstory and the relevant context behind why you made the investment
A PhotoBooth
I am not sure it was the worst investment or the worst time to make the investment; however, we purchased a photo booth. We financed the booth so we were committed to 48 months of financing or face destroying the company’s and my personal credit.
Our liaison to book the booth was fired from the company that was going to be our saving Grace. No one connected to us was willing to operate the booth. We paid over 30k for the booth and NEVER made 1.00 in return. The lesson learned was to always have a Plan B for investment because Plan A often doesn’t work. Also never rely on one person, place, or thing to sustain your company.
Sybil , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am from Kannapolis, NC. I was the 1st paternal grandchild which automatically caused me to believe I had a big assignment. Because both of my grandfathers were entrepreneurs, they encouraged me to do whatever I wanted to do in life. They told me I could be whatever I wanted to be and do whatever I wanted to be. I decided when I was little, that I wanted to be a judge. I wanted to be able to help make decisions for people. While I have over 20years in taxation and insurance, it was my journey of getting my Juris Doctorate that propelled me to start my latest company The Eroc Group, www.contacteroc.com. My company focuses on contract management, business management and non-profit management. People were struggling reading and signing contracts. Our company has built the strength of helping people understand contracts and contract negotiations, helping business owners understand the proper way to set up a company, helping non-profits with the process of setting up and establishing while understanding the duties of the board members and compliance with financial reporting. Clients count on me to help them get it right the first time. What sets me apart from others is, I don’t look for the fastest way, I look for the best way for my client in the long run and my heart. I care for my clients. I am most proud of the fact that I have served people all over the world and in 20 plus years of being in business, my clients continue to refer me to other people. I don’t do advertising, I am a referral-based company. I want potential clients to know, the services I provide, after one encounter with our company, you will know you made the best decision for your future. Once we provide you with a service, you always have the option to give us a call in the future if you have questions about that service.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Yes, I completed law school early, December 2018 with full hopes of taking the February 2019 bar exam. Between graduating and January 1, 2019, my grandson who was 4 years old started living with me. As daunting as it was, I started preparing for the bar exam which I failed. Although my mind was telling me it wasn’t the time, my friends said I was being a coward. Not only was my mind telling me it wasn’t time, so was my spirit man but I signed up to take the bar again in July 2019 and failed All of those I assisted and went to school with passed on their 1st attempt. I didn’t struggle through law school so I didn’t understand. If you know anything about taking the bar, the more you take it and fail, the more of a mental thing it becomes. Because of the businesses I have, it was not something I needed but something I still wanted. I took the bar exam again in July 2021 and failed it by 15 points. It was the closest I had been to passing. I signed up to take it in February 2022 but I got Covid and could not retain the information. When I got Covid and couldn’t take the bar, our ministry, Grace Ministries MGM launched in Montgomery, Alabama, While I felt good about doing what God told me to do, I still felt bad about not reaching my own personal goal. I am scheduled to take the bar again in July 2022. Someone may ask, how is this resilience. I have not given up on my personal goals and what I know I am called to do all while my daughter has experienced health issues and keeping my grandson. I refuse to give up on my goals. The most important thing to remember when reaching for a goal, most big goals are not easily achieved and it takes a strong individual to face adversity and continue to reach for the desired outcome in the midst of disappointments
Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?
In 2006 I purchased an insurance franchise. For the sake of integrity, I will not name that company. The process was extensive and invasive, with a thorough background check including net worth, credit check, obtaining more licensures, and traveling to the midwest on multiple occasions to meet with the people making the decision on me having the franchise. I purchased it because I had about 10 years in taxation. Back then in the business model, insurance franchises and taxation go together. I already had my insurance license and was advised to get an insurance business by my business coach. I believed the 2 together could create a great financial opportunity.
