Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Luna Liu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Luna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
AI is being utilized in the illustration business to produce pictures automatically, from graphic design to content production for websites and social media. Some regular illustration work may be replaced and refused if AI becomes increasingly adept at duties. Illustrators who primarily work on repetitious or template-based tasks may be displaced as a result of this. Determining the copyright and ownership of AI-generated art can sometimes be difficult. Some artists’ work is being exploited by AI training platforms to directly generate the same styles, which is completely inappropriate and unlawful. However, AI may be a useful tool for producing ideas, styles, and concepts. It can assist illustrators in breaking through creative obstacles by recommending different techniques or styles, so broadening their creative possibilities. I believe AI is an unavoidable trend in the creative world, and I hope illustrators can face it, not to just avoid it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Luna Liu, an illustrator who mostly works in advertising and editorial illustration. I came from China, and my hometown is Hegang, a small city near the Chinese-Russian border, where there is usually snow and ice in the winter. Initially, art for me was the ice and snow sculptures on the street every year; I could sense them, and even though touching them in cold may cause frostbite, I was attracted by the intense sensory impression. Therefore, I utilize vivid and highly saturated colors in my works, as well as symbolic and philosophical aspects, to strongly impact the viewer’s subconscious and make my work leave a lasting impact on them. So I also serve my clients in a way that makes their products stand out from the other drawing or design of the products.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Everyone has a lot of feelings in their heart. Yet there are times when we are not encouraged to express our thoughts. And for people who are sensitive and introverted, subtle feelings are hard to describe in words. Art is a bridge for self-expression, and I think anyone who likes to express themselves can speak to the world through art. Therefore, for those who truly love art, the response to our voice is more than just an echo anymore. No matter how many clients we have gained or how much we have accomplished in the technical field, this is the greatest happiness you can possibly gain from being an artist.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In the beginning when I entered the illustration field, I didn’t have any art foundation and didn’t know what a portfolio was. I don’t have money to take professional classes, too. So I got an elementary school art teacher to teach me how to draw and was accepted to SCAD grad program after completing five series drawings in four months. I still don’t regret my decision to give up communication studies in favor of a completely new field.
